It seems that psychanalysis could cure OCD and CBT could train you live with OCD, but the thing is, psychanalysis is Rocket Science, so how many rocket scientists do we have per patient out there?

I'm afraid that psychoanalysis doesn't cure anything. Freud himself came to recognize this. The effective treatments for OCD are medication and CBT.

I think that applies to most of us! But CBT does help to make us able to get by.

HI

Psychoanalysts will say their discipline is the thing to have for OCD, and psychotherapists will do likewise for their discipilne.

Having experienced both, I can say than psychoanalysis did very little for me - they treat all symptoms as manifestations of the subsconscious and they want to treat them as such. Above all, its the skill, the emphathy and the knowledge of the therapist that counts most. .

OCD is largely environmental, genetics and anxiety so the subsconcious doesnt play a big part in this (me thinks).

Best stick with CBT or even better with ACT (acceptance and Committment). Only becayse CBT was administered by health workers with little tact or feelings for how the OCD patient would feel and react.

Add medications such as anti anxiety and anti depressants, with a a good effort on the part of the patient, OCD can be controlled. Understandign OCD is a bit part of the equation - so I recommend plenty of reading - see Dr Phillipson website - many articles there. It will expland your knowledge on OCD and what its required. Not that I follow entirely his teachings, but its good writing and useful in the fight v. OCD overall.

Be well

Max

Great thanks for your post!

When you say environmental what do you mean? Parents, family, friends, circumstances etc?

Hi

the environment in which you were brought up (I guess this will please the supporters of psychoanalysis) or have experienced or experience now. I think there must some kind of predisposition for this, for the anxiety to manifest itself in this way. Still my opinion of course.
