OCD Intrusive thoughts

Hi please can anyone help.... I get paranoid that I have raped someone that I need to check the front door to make sure I havnt been outside. This thought happens so many times everyday and doesn't stop. Even when I'm in my front room sat on a chair I still get the paranoid thought and need to check the door. What is the best medication to help with this? I have been doing CBT for 4 weeks now as well. Thank you all.

This is typical of OCD. It puts poisonous thoughts in your head. I'm sure that deep down you know perfectly well that you haven't raped anyone. But OCD drives out rationality.

Checking doors is also a common OCD thing. In a lot of cases, it is because someone thinks that they haven't shut it properly and someone could break in, etc. Checking it to make sure you haven't been outside isn't that different. It's still OCD.

I can't say much about the best medication, because everyone is different and something that works for me might not work for you. I take sertraline, an SSRI commonly prescribed for OCD, but other SSRIs work better for some. I also take a low dose of an anti-psychotic called aripiprazole. I'm not psychotic, but taking a low dose boosts the sertraline. It could be worth asking your doctor or psychiatrist about.

CBT does take a bit of a while to kick in. It's not the easiest thing to do, but it is effective, so keep on with it.

It sounds as though you are afraid of going out at all. I have agoraphobia and know how it feels. Perhaps therapy should include going outside. It's not much fun being stuck indoors and you need to have some enjoyment in your life.

Thank you very much for your reply. What you said is all true.

I am currently taking 20mg of Citalopram and it seems my thoughts and anxiety are worse. I've taken it for 4 weeks now. Before that I was taking paroxetine 40mg for many years but it stopped working and it made me so bloated too and put on a mass amount of weight.

I have been having CBT for 4 weeks now.

I am interested in the aripiprazole. It looks like it fits my need. How long does it take to have an effect in the system on average?

I don't think it takes that long to work. It's only a low dose, and don't expect miracles, but I've found it helps. I'm sorry about your weight gain. I took some medication some years ago that made me put on weight so I know how lousy it is! I put on 2 1/2 stone, or 35 pounds, and I'm still trying to lose it. I thought hard about taking aripriprazole in case it had the same effect, but thankfully not.

CBT isn't an instant fix, but it is effective, so keep on with it. Medication is most effective when it is combined with it.
