Hi . You should go to the doctor’s and tell the doctor everything . The sooner the better .OCD is an awful thing to live with , I’ve lived with it for 40+ yrs .

Yes, HOCD is very real. It is distressing and it can really affect one's ability to sustain a healthy relationship with a partner or husband. I did not understand what it was for decades and I find myself alone in my senior years. However, I now know that there is help; we just need to learn how to talk openly and honestly about it so that it loses its power over us. There are many wonderful resources on the internet to help with this. In fact, the video clip provided by Moon_B in your response is excellent.

thank you very much.. this video is really helpful.. thank you very much

My son has this manifestation of OCD (I won’t say “type” cos really it’s all OCD, just different expressions of the same thing)... and he has found therapy really helpful. He did a combo of CBT then a couple of sessions of ERP and now is kind of maintaining I guess with his own practice of the strategies he learned and also regular meditation. Everyone’s different I know but just offering his experience so you can see there is some hope. I’m so sorry this is happening to you. (And Cambridgeborn I’m really sorry this has affected your relationships. It seems like this is something that’s only been understood relatively recently so you wouldn’t have been offered the help you needed. I should say though Cambridgeborn, don’t give up hope of a relationship if that’s something you would like! Plenty of seniors meet each other now - including online - and there’s much more understanding I think of mental health issues etc. ) I wish you both the very best.

Thank you for your kind words. I do still hold out for the possibility of a loving partner in my senior years. The resources on this site are really helpful. Fifty years ago, when my illness was in full bloom, I had absolutely no one to talk to about it because not even therapists understood what HOCD and ROCD was. Now, I understand it and I am committed to finding happiness despite the illness. I wish healing and happiness for your son.
