False Memory-Intrusive thoughts

To do with False memory OCD, my intrusive thoughts have made me virtually housebound. Everyone tells me that intrusive thoughts are normal, therefore everyone gets them. Why then do they cope so well with life without constantly feeling suicidal. Am I interpreting them differently? If so, why? All my intrusive thoughts are about things that are totally unacceptable to me. Usually this is to do with death, harm and subsequent doubt. The doubts I have usually end up in necessary washing of body and clothes, this process is so demanding that I think it puts an obstacle in the way to recovery. What do other people think?

It may appear that everyone is coping, but however 'normal' we appear, we are internally battling against it. It's such a secretive condition, and people with OCD do their best to hide it however they can, because they don't want to display their weird behaviour, because there's often a lot of shame attached to their thoughts, and because a lot of people don't really understand much about OCD.

Therapy for OCD is about learning that everyone has odd thoughts, but most people ignore them and don't even really notice them. For those of us who have OCD, we attach a disproportionate importance to them and think they mean something when they don't.

These rituals are exhausting and many of us will have done the obsessive washing! For me, it's like I'm washing off the thoughts.

The trick is to learn that ignoring the thoughts makes them go away. They're like bullies, and if they don't get the attention they demand they get fed up and disappear. It's not an easy thing to learn, but persevering with the therapy is worth it.
