Hi im 45 years old and had mild ocd 20 years ago after the birth of my 1st son. it went away on its own and didn't happen with my other children. fast forward 20 years later after a death in my family I started with health anxiety then out of nowhere bad intrusive harm thoughts. I didn't know what was happening to me. i thought i was going crazy! i was petrified!!! i started having panic attacks. I did alot of research and realised that this is what happened after my 1st pregnancy! it makes sense now. I have been on Zoloft for a year and still have the thoughts. they make me sad but do not bother me any more. I want to get off meds because I have gained so much weight . I am so afraid the anxiety will come back!

Hi

have you considered more physical exercise and maybe exchange to a different SSRI or add specific anti anxiety medication ?

If you still have the thoughts but they dont bother you anymore is quite an achievement. You need to discuss this with your therapist or psychiatrist. Maybe just taking antianxiety ad nothing else will work for you - Xanax, Lorazepam are quite effective.

Be well

Max

thankyou for responding! I am not sure of the medicine is taking away the anxiety the thoughts cause or just learning and time made the anxiety lessen. I'm just so afraid to stop med and go backwards . would love to know how others did when stopping medication. I feel like now that I understand what this is I may be able to deal with it.

I won t let go of medication, maybe try less over a period and try to phase it out, but I am very reluctant, given that medication made me better in the first place.

I'm surprised about the weight gain. I have been on sertraline for more than ten years and haven't had any related weight gain. But side effects differ from one person to another. Don't stop taking it suddenly, if you really want to come off it. It needs to be done gradually, with the help of a doctor.

I know how distressing weight gain can be, as I had it on another medication some years ago. Perhaps consider a different SSRI, in case it works for you without the weight gain, and try some self help books to fortify yourself against the OCD.

Oh gosh you sound just like me and other people I met here. My first anxiety attack was after I gave birth to my first child too!

scarey stuff! I never knew anxiety could cause thoughts like that. I think now that I understand it I will be able to deal with it better. I'm lowering dose of med starting tomorrow. I'd really like to be off it. I'm glad your doing better. 😊

Thank you! I think educating yourself with these thoughts really helps!
