Hi all:

here is a link which you should find useful, its from the Los Angeles OCD Centre.

ocdla.com/mindfulness-cbt-o... on OCD and treatment.

And here is an extract on Mindfulness, from am article on the site above. Easy to read and implement. Not too long :-).

=====

What is Mindfulness?

Mindfulness, as it applies to the treatment of Obsessive Compulsive Disorder (OCD) and other anxiety disorders, is perhaps most easily understood as developing the skill of non-judgmental awareness and acceptance of present-moment experience, including all of the unwanted thoughts, feelings, sensations, and urges that are at the heart of these conditions.

What this means is that, from a mindfulness perspective, the individual’s primary agenda ought not be to change or eliminate their unwanted thoughts, feelings, sensations, and urges, but rather to fully acknowledge and accept them.

Note that this does not mean to suggest that one should or must learn to enjoy these painful experiences. Rather, the aim of mindfulness is to recognize and accept that these uncomfortable experiences are transitory and inevitable aspects of human life.

From a mindfulness perspective, not accepting these unwanted inner experiences is the source of much of our self-induced suffering. Furthermore, fully accepting the reality of their existence is more likely to lead to a reduction in our suffering than any attempts at resisting and controlling these experiences.

=====

I hope it s of some use to all of you, particularly those who struggle badly to control intrusive thoughts and false memories.

Be well

Max

HI guys:

any more replies?

I would be interested in knowing if you find the Mindfulness more effective than the traditional CBT - in that it should not generate the usual anxiety that comes with having intrusive thoughts - as well as with exposures in CBT.

It should be therefore more 'user friendly' and tolerable, as well as being maybe more effective at allowing intrusive thoughts to come, stay and go without much upheaval. Let me know :-)

Thanks!

Be well

I learnt a similar technique to deal with panic. Think of it as clouds overhead, or a wave or leaves on a stream. Or any other metaphor you like! It gathers pace, reaches you, is right overhead or alongside you, or swells. Then it passes, breaks and disperses. Realizing this helps you, or at least helps me, to put up with the panic, as it can and does subside.

I don't think mindfulness is useful on its own, but I think that it can help used in conjunction with other things like medication and CBT. A range of therapies may be necessary to tackle this horrible condition.

CBT didnt help at all, for me. ACT, which focuses on the use of mindfulness is a more recent technique and mindfulness is a crucial element of it. But everyone has his or her preferred technique. Some people reswponjd to it, some dont. I didnt want to suffer more with the CBT treatment than I ready did with OCD. MIndfulness is not 100% proof for everybody but nothing is with OCD.
