Fearful Thoughts

Hi I have a terrible fear of going to hell when I die for things I have done in the past. I am not deeply religious and don't go to church but I have got into a state recently about things I have done/have'nt done in the past. I am a woman in my late 50s and have been suffering with OCD since I was 19. I have had varying types of OCD ranging from checking to intrusive thoughts over the years. I am having sleepless nights thinking what is the point of anything anymore if I am going to go to hell.

There isn't a God so there's no Hell!

Hi Lucy03,

I had similar thoughts and fears of going to helI also had every form of OCD- ruminations, contamination, checking, hoarding, doubting, etc. Something happened in 2009 that made me fearful and anxious. I couldn't turn to my friends for support because I couldn't trust them so I turned to my friends who were Christians. I was such a mess mentally and emotionally, and they were patient and empathetic and non judgemental. I started to attend church. It was at church that I broke down and they saw that I would should see their counsellor. So began a 18 month journey of healing, almost 2 hour session every fortnight. I have become a Christian although I am not religious. I understand more than I did before, which was not what I thought.

GOD does not condemn people, He convicts us of our wrong doing, which means He points out our wrong doing (sin) , and if we are sorry we accept His son our the saviour, Jesus, confess and repent; that means to promise not to do those things again and to turn our backs on our old lives, to follow the teachings of Jesus, then we are forgiven. God does not want people to live with torment of guilt or fear.

My user name is a line from scripture that is a promise from God . Jeremiah 29:11, " I know the plans I have for you. Plans to bless you and prosper you, to give you a hope and a future."

Another verse that has helped me by meditation is 1Timothy 1:7, "God did not give us a spirit of anxiety and fear, but one of power, love and a sound mind."

My mind is a lot freer. I Don't over-thiynk anymore. I sometimes have the most horrible thoughts but I Don't fear them I just throw them out or I pray against it. If a thought or feeling persist I pray and read scripture that concerns the topic and it goes. Like I said I'm not religious. I still have my faults, doubts and issues but I am still being healed, a work in progress.

I am not here to preach to you just to tell you how it was for me. Some people reading this might frown or sniff at this reply but I just wanted to reach out to you to alay your fears.

If you want to look into church pastoral care, look for a church that has a healing prayer ministry. One word of caution; not all churches are the same , if a church makes you feel fearful, uneasy, controlling; then look for another where you feel welcome, safe and calm.

May God bless you and heal you!

Ps, Just start by attending church. See how you get on.
