Foods to boost iron levels

Fatigue and low energy can be a common issue and of course there are several potential drivers to this. One of them, especially for women and especially for postpartum women can be due to low iron and a low level of haemoglobin. Fatigue results in the blood simply not being sufficiently oxygenated as haemoglobin is the protein that carries oxygen in our blood. It needs good levels of iron and the hormone erythropoietin produced by the kidneys. A reason why kidney issues can also be very much linked to fatigue.

Food is a great partner to help nourish the blood. Include the following to do so and buy organic wherever possible:

Beetroot, dark leafy greens, dried apricots (sulphite free), chick peas, grass fed meat (please avoid commercial meats - they are full of grain feeds and antibiotics which is causing all sorts of issues for human health, animal health and the wider environment. Your shopping choices are hugely powerful for changing our social and environmental landscape as well as your inner health.

Avoid too much black tea with iron rich foods as the tannins interfere with iron absorption. Same goes for red wine due to tannin content.

To increase iron absorption of foods, squeeze fresh lemon juice onto your greens - vitamin C enhances iron absorption which is present in the lemon.
