Thank you.

Hey Linde, I've been taking 3 courses of antibiotics (Tetralysal/lymecycline) while being on 15mg MTX injections. I think it depends what type of antibiotic it is!

Best, Christine xx

For this one I think you needed to be guided by your doctor, as it really depends on the situation. Sometimes it's ok, sometimes it's really not a good idea. It depends on you and your medical history, the amount of MTX you take, how serious the thing you're taking antibiotics is and so on. As long as you make sure that the person prescribing the antibiotics knows that you are on MTX (as there are some anti-b's you can't take at all) then take their advice. Polly

It depends on type the dangerous one is trimethoprin.. and penicillin is only with drs say so as it raises the level of mtx in the blood ( penicillin) some are fine check with your local health professional

I have been on Mtx for a few years and my Dr says it's ok. She prescribes Amoxicillin and that's ok but Flucoxicillin has recently impacted on my liver so be guided by your Dr. -probably better than the nurse in this situation. Actually not treating infections is very bad you should hit them hard immediately as the Mtx masks the severity of them. Do go and see your Dr.

I had a terrible water infection whilst taking MTX and was told by my GP that the usual antibiotic given for urine infections is a definate no no when taking MTX so he checked through medical books to prescribe one that was compatible.

Good Luck x

Hi when I was on methotrexate I was prescribed flucoxicillian and it made me so ill, my GP said to keep taking it and not stop the methotrexate, he was so wrong. When I asked my Rheumy nurse afterwards she said knock the methotrexate off for a couple of weeks when on antibiotics. Hope this helps, Carole

Hi Linde

As many others have mentioned, you really need to speak to a health professional about this. There are certain antibiotics that are contraindicated when you're taking MTX so it will depend on which antibiotic is prescribed but also may depend on other factors so you would need specific medical advice on this.

Kind regard

I certainly have, so must be okay (I'm still here!)

I would imagine your GP would know (chemist also, as they are usually very knowledgeable about these things).

hey Christine (hidden)

Why on earth do you think your opinion about Tetracycline and Methotrexate is worth anything?

I hope all of you will never listen to people like Christine and consult an MD.
