Mads tell us a bit more please. Has the sore throat started with the MTX you took this week? If so you should have seen a doctor by now because you are supposed to report sore throats soon as possible if you are on this drug. I don't know about RA causing sore throats but not worth chancing - phone your out of hours doc if necessary. X

When I started getting sore throats it took me a while to realise it was actually mouth ulcers down the back of my throat.... All sorted now as switched to injectable MTX. Polly

Thank u polly will investigate that

Hello everyone thank u for answering. My sore throat has nothing to do with medication i think it is ra.

It happens regardless of medication i had it last week when on sulpha only, have it now and only had one smalldose of metx on monday. I do think i have had it on and off for ages particularly when i flare my throat is sore too.

I take pollys point though could be ulcers .

Hi i have had a constant sore throat for the last 4 years. My doctor says it is all part of RA and the flu like symptoms some of us get. My voice breaks when i am talking and i sometimes choke on food or drinks but i suffer from sjorgens disease too which is dry eyes and mouth so this could also not help. Karen

just be aware sulpha and mtx can both affect throat though.. if in doubt check.. gargle with difflam rinse.. fron your local pharm £5 small bottle behind countet med if not , salt water

I do, definitely, because I have had them during flares when I have been between meds. They are very painful and feel deeper down in my throat than a sore throat caused by an infection. Also they tend to be one sided and swap sides every couple of days or so. I don't get any swelling associated with them. I told my consultant but he didn't have much to say about it.

I get the sore throat with flares even when I haven't been on meds. The soreness goes right into my ears too and hurts when I swallow.xx

Hi Mads,I have found it only goes when the flare up goes. xx

in reply to Rita56

Yes that is the same as me. I don't know how many times i have thought that i was coming down with something when i realised it happens when everything else is inflamed as well. The naproxen does help some but it is a bit more scary when it is in the throat area, i think.

I've just started having pain in my throat, totally different to a normal, infectious sore throat. I realised it was different when it got better or worse at the same time as my other joints. Thankfully paracetamol helps it a bit but swallowing is always difficult. I assume it's linked to my jaw being affected by the disease.

Hi, I had a regular sore throat for years before I was diagnosed with Secondary Sjogrens, which affects 25% of RA patients.

My sore throats are accompanied by swollen glands and sore eyes too. Things have improved with MTX but it is still there occasionally.

Gargling with a soluble paracetomol can help.

i though sjogrens only give the eyes problems, must look it up and find out more about it.

I find that my throat gets sore on the days before i have a flare (not diagnosed yet so no meds) i know whats coming, hurts to swallow and bang within 2 days my feet, neck and hands become really painful, suprizingly tho, its rare to have swelling in more than one area, usually one of my hands balloon and the other doesnt :(

in reply to scotstigress

Hello Scotstigress, I forgot about my sore thoat now that my jaw/ear has taken over, so it may still be ra and not an infection.

Hope you get diagnosed soon and get some pain relief, its no fun being in that awful, what is wrong with me stage.

This is an old, old post but it has just popped up at the side in my 'related posts' list, and it's very interesting. I have always been prone to sore throats that amount to nothing, but over the past couple of years I have had a daily sore throat which comes by every evening and lasts into the night and sometimes to the morning. It's usually very mild, but sometimes flares... I hadn't connected it with RA (mostly because I have only been diagnosed a couple of months) but now I think of it, it has pretty much gone since I started on meds... (Apart from this last week, when I have a cold/virus)... Hmmm, curious!
