Hi I have had several steroid in jections into shoulders and wrist and 1 into my btm they all worked within 48hours. You dont say whether it was into a joint or a systemic one into your btm. Joints are more difficult to inject into and if not in the correct spot may not work as well whereas the one in btm gets into your system for more generalised problems. Good luck and hope it works soon. The other thing I found was that the btm injection made me feel better fairly quickly and I overdid things so you need to make sure you are not overexerting.

Hi Cris, Do you know if you had the same injection as me, and sorry i am going to sound like a idiot now lol, but what do you mean by btm,

the intramuscular steroid injections kind of sneak up on me rather than have the dramatic effect that the pills do (within 24 hours). Also, some people talk about getting a "steroid flare" first, that might last a day or two before they get the good results. Sometimes the effect of the injection is so gradual that you don't actually notice it yourself, but friends or family will look at you and say you are looking better, or moving better, or doing more. I'd hang in there for another day or two though before you think it isn't working.

Hi I had one 11 days ago, i had it in the buttocks, The injection i had was IM Depo-medrone 120mg, i have to have this repeated every 4 weeks for the next 3 months,

I did have a injection in to my shoulders, that was at the end of June, that worked within two days, and have had no problems in my shoulders since, But the 1 i had 11 days ago,

has taken a lot longer, I suppose it must depend if you had it put in the joint that hurts, or into the buttock, I might of been expecting to much from the injection i had in the buttocks,

Because it still hasn't worked as well as i thought, its a lot better don't get me wrong, but i properly expected it to work more quickly and get a better result ,But maybe when i have my next 1 , i will get a better result,

Hope this helps,

Hi Shirl

People use all sorts of abbreviations on here, and sometimes it takes me a while to get them! 'btm' meant 'bottom' and I can see from your 2nd comment that this is what you had as well.

For anyone that doesn't know, a general steroid injection is administered into the buttocks, when the problems are more 'all over'. When you have swelling in a specific joint they may inject into the joint instead.

Steroids typically take up to 48 hours to work, but unfortunately I have spoken to a lot of people that had steroid injections that didn't work r, if they're really unlucky, never seem to get the great relief from steroids that others seem to get.

I do think it's worth you telling your rheumatology nurse that this didn't work for you though jq22. Due to the long-term problems with steroids they will not be happy to do another one too soon after this, but it would be useful for them to know that it hasn't helped.

Kind regards

Hi, I've had jabs directly into the joint a few times and, despite following all the rules about keeping it as still as poss on the day, I've always found it took several days to kick in but then gave wonderful relief for a while. We're all different so please don't start worrying that you're one of the people that get no relief just yet. You might just be a weirdo who refuses to conform to the norm like me ;) Hope you start feeling better soon x

I'm definitely one who really didn't think I was getting any relief from the IM injection at first, having had immediate and very obvious relief from steroid tablets. But, I did realise after a week or so that it had actually relieved things quite a lot, and it did keep working for several weeks. It definitely wasn't dramatic relief for me though. If you are going to have monthly injections, then you may well notice a lot more on your second one.
