hi my i had blood test last week i havent seen doc yet but i had to pick up a percription for 5 mg folic acid 1 a day i dnt understand why

Folic Acid is usually used with methotrexate as it counteracts the distruction of your vitamin b, that can cause hair loss, bad skin etc... don't know if you are taking mtx but that could be a reason?

Hi, i have to take folic acid 6 days a week. Im taking methotrexate & sulfasalazine. As Ella said already it helps prevent damage to liver, kidneys lungs & helps againt hair loss & vitamin b. If their for use with Methotrexate they should be taken everyday cept the day you take Methotrexate. Well thats how i have to take mine.

Hi Vicky, almost certainly you are on Methotrexate. Folic acid is prescribed to counter the side effects of MTX. Don't take it on the day you take your MTX. but on the other days depending on your prescription. Some of us take it for 6 days a week, some for 1 day, some for 2 days only. It does vary.

I used to take it only 1 day a week but when my MTX was increased I was told to take it 6 days a week.

Don't forget to speak to your GP/consultant/Nurse about any concerns you may have. This forum is very useful for getting first hand views but we are not doctors so any problems, speak to your medics.
