Is'nt bursitis fluid on the joint? They would have to test the fluid and see if its synovial fluid to see if RA? Er I think. Well inflammation is anything 'itis'.

Sorry not more definitive, but I think if they had'nt diagnosed RA, they could say from a scan say you have a bursitis in your hip joint, but it could be RA. Why do you ask?

Hi,

Bursitis is inflammation of the fluid filled sac know as the Bursa, it can be caused by RA. I have had RA for 41/2 years now and for 4 years i have been under control but i do have flare ups usually around this time of year. Last year i had an emergency appointment at the hospital and saw a different consultant she said that my RA was under control and she suspected i had Bursitis. I researched this later at home and realised this fitted my symptoms perfectly. i have just had a little flare in my shoulders again but take ibuprofen or naprosyn when needed and that seems to help.

I wondered whether this was common in RA patients.

thank you for your reply,

Lynda

Yup - I had one around my achilles tendon - tortuous agony for a while but with restm icing and anti-inflammatories plus support from my podiatrist it seems to be settling down again thank goodness!

I have bursitis too and RA. I was so worried that I had hip joint damage that I made my rheumy do a cat scan on my lower back and hips, also found bulging disc in lower back too which wasn't helping. Get a cortisone shot in each hip and you will feel good in a week or so, it was the only thing to get rid of pain.
