Do any of you have a blue badge or claim disability allowance? Just wondering if it is worth applying?

Hi ..yes , after much resistance I have a blue badge. My GP and hubby pushed me into it but I have to say I am grateful now. I manage to go out on my own because of it.I do come up against ignorance as to why I have it but once they see the stick they forget I am young etc. You have to fill in a form and so does your GP and then get it approved etc. Mine came through within 2 weeks of applying. If your mobility is poor then go for it!

Yes Marnie, it is worth having. I've got dla for mobility and i also have a blue badge. I have to rely on other people to take me as i'm unable to drive at the moment and as the badge is in your name you can use in any car. It gives you access to car park spaces closer to the entrance so that you don't have to walk far to the shops. Also most places allow free parking for blue bagde holders. There has to some advantages to our suffering, thats how i try to look at it anyway. We suffer so much with our ra.

Best of luck. Sylvia.

Hi

Good luck with the DLA, I only get the basic carers allowance. I am replying for a higher mobility allowance, fingers crossed. My only tip is put the facts about you bad days and don't give them any facts that you have good days. Don't of course. About the blue badge, get one. I have been to a number of events and with my badge my driver has got in free for being my carer. We went to edingbugh last weekend and they gave him a room free for again being my carer.

Good Luck Beeper

Hello Marnie

It is worth claiming disability benefits. The forms are not straight forward, and you need to give lots of information.

It is advisable to see a benefits advisor at the CAB etc.

I would also advise going to the Disability Alliance website:

disabilityalliance.org/

In the shop section, you can purchase the 'Disability Rights Handbook', which gives you everything you need to know about all disability benefits. It is £28.50 or £14.00 if you are on any benefits.

This book is the one used by all advisors, and is worth getting.

They also they do a separate booklet called:

'DLA/AA - to making a claim'. It is £8.00 or £3.00 if you are on any benefits.

There is a 2011 update that you can download.

The Disability Rights Handbook everything to do with being disabled, including:

income tax, vat, retirement, practical help at home (care services, buying care, help with equipment, housing grants), after a death, health benefits, tv licence concessions, christmas bonus, claims and appeals, care homes, going back to work, tax credits, help with rent and council tax, benefits in hospital, children and young people.

In my opinion this is the very best guide you can purchase.

I think, but I am not sure but some libraries will have copies for you to look at, but not take away.

I hope that you find this useful

Yes I have a blue badge I must say it is brill for being able to park

near the shops.

I have a blue badge we have bought a car that allows me to drive my electric wheelchair straight in I can't drive anymore due to health but I've been trying to claim dla for twelve months now with no joy yet when I showed welfare rights my claim form she said I hadn't explained my problems enough so she has done all this for me now and has wrote to them asking how can they deny me my claim when my condition has caused me to need a wheelchair and around the house either a wheeled trXolley or two sticks. And I also receive two hours care everyday to help me wash dress etc to help me continue to work even if only an hour or two a day.

Good luck in your claim but I would seek help from welfare rights my ot sorted this for me take care x
