Hey, first week of mtx and got insomnia and (in polite terms) an upset tummy. I understand the sickness/runs but is sleeplessness usual?

Hi Gail, MTX throws in all kinds of side effects but it's when these side effects continue they become a real problem. Are you on tablet or injection? you do tend to get more of the annoying side effects with the tablet form, but it is early days which ever your taking.Sickness/nausea is the most common as to is the upset stomach but you must mention to you GP/Consultant if they continue, usually an increase in folic acid helps.

As for the insomnia, I can't personally comment as I've never really been a good sleeper always waking in the night. Is it pain though that's keeping you awake or sore joints etc? you can get something to help you settle at night so this again is worth mentioning to you GP/Consultant.

Just a few days ago someone posted a similar question so it may be worth taking a look of some of those replies too.

Take care and good luck.

Hi, thanks so much for replying. Only taken 7.5 tablets and that was 6 days ago! Took mtx for 4 week a few months ago and had to stop as we found out I hadn't ever had any immunisations and didn't have the tummy upset. Worried as I'm supposed to increase dose every 2 weeks

Hi, I am also on MXT and Hydroxchloroquine, nearly 4 years now- never had any nausea except in early days, but have a really sensitive stomach . Literally only made the link a few months ago, when my new husband started mentioning my unusual regularity (all s bit embarrassing) and haven't yet spoken to the doctor... Checked both drugs for side effects snd Upset stomach is listed as a side effect, but RA has been so much better on the drugs I'm keeping too them!!x

Good on you, sometimes the side effects are worth putting up with when the treatment works so well. It's a small price to pay at times.

Hop your RA continues to improve.
