Driving and RA ?

Has anybody had experience of having their licence revoked due to RA ? If so what are the reasons ? Do GPs routinely ask about driving and joints etc? Its not happened to me yet but a reference on another blogg got me thinking ......

Thanks Gang

I was advised by my OT to advise my insurers that I routinely wear wrist splints when driving - so that in the event of an accident the other party couldn't point to my splints as the 'cause'.

I was told to stop driving when my eyesight was deteriorating with cataracts and have just passed the sight test to start driving again following surgery - I was told that it was my responsibility, legally, to ensure that I met the driving standard (sight test).

I imagine that there would be considerable impairment in muscle strength and flexibility plus impaired response time before a license would be revoked. There are lots of adaptations such as hand controls that can be made to a vehicle to ensure that we can stay mobile and independent as long as possible. My cousin is paralysed from the chest down and drives an adapted vehicle to get her to and from work everyday:-)

I found the OT very helpful with tips, tricks and aides for getting in and out of the car etc.

I agree with Philip - you should also inform your insurance company anyway - I did but did inform them that my driving ability was not impaired in any way and they were content with my assurance. I also notified DVLA but they were not interested as again, it did not interfere with my ability to drive. However, anything affecting sight must be reported because of the implications. thats helpful will let my insurers know as would hate to have insurance invalid etc

looked at phillips link its good it justs say is your car adapted?. some insurance companies dont bother., my gp/ consultant had never citied my need to tell them best to be do so if indoubt!! the biggest issue is drug driving!! found out myself when first dignosed could hardly walk!! wanged cat on bollard took out alloy wheel and suspension!!. not an accident no one else involved!!. that shook me. I CONSIDER very carefully what I TAKE before a get behind the wheel!! drug driving even prescritpion drugs can be used as evidence in event of RTA!. so eg driving with excessive co/codamol/ morphine/ co -dydramol/ tramadol/ diazepam. etc bad for driving when driving i take anti inflamms only. and paracetamol with one co-dydramol or even paracetamol only..
