On April 13th I had a bunion removal, 4 hammertoe straightenings, and what is called the Clayton procedure where they remove the metatarsal heads, The redness in the picture is not from the surgurical healing, but a reaction I had with either the gauze or the cleanser they used. It itched like crazy. The picture was before they put a hard cast on. The itch is back I don't know how I am going to deal with this for two weeks. Suggestions for allergic reactions under casts? The doctor just says to take Benadryl but it really makes me non-functioning.
It is, by far, more inconvenient than bilateral knee replacements! Non weight bearing for a month! This means, for me, a cast for a month and pins in for a month. I am suppose to graduate to a special surgical shoe once I am done with the cast. Luckily I heal well, but this total procedure is a long process. Sadly, my other foot will need it at some point.
Oh the joys of a 36 year old with RA.

They really do look funny when you see them in person. They are pushed down from the pins and the foot is still swollen. Luckily, I am not in pain...just the agony of the itch.
Ouch Mercedes they look painful to me! I've got horrible pain in both my feet tonight so this probably isn't the photo I want to see but I do relate to the itching having had chronic eczema all my life until about five years ago when it disappeared and now I have RA in it's place! I think you should try and get a GP to prescribe a stronger antihistamine than Benadryl. There are non drowsy ones but you may just have to rest up. it's torture not being able to scratch but then it's probably a whole lot better for your skin! TTx
My toes prior to the surgery really were not all that bad. I have a family history of bad feet AND RA. The big toe would sometimes sneak under the one next to it, but wasn't that big of a deal. The bunion was quite big and made it difficult to fit into wide shoes. The problem with the hammertoes is the toes dislocated from the metatarsals. The metatarsals drifted down - was basically walking on them. I would tell people it felt like stepping on a Lego every time I took a step.
Two weeks from now I will be reveling in the fact my pins will be out and I can itch my leg properly!
Oh Mercedes, I had the same foot surgery & pins in 2008 on my right foot, except for no bunion & I had my big toe fused. Now my foot is a size smaller than the left, but it doesn't hurt anymore, yeah!
The recovery was hard, but so worth it to not have the pain with every step.
We had a Geico (car insurance) commercial that had eyes on top of a pile of money back then, and I had 2 pins that showed through the wrap I had and it looked just like those eyes. I found a picture & put it on the side of my cubicle at the time & people would just laugh. It was so funny.
