Now I am wondering: Have had a lot of pain and some swelling in my left hand, besides the right one that had wrist surgery. The right one I've had a lot of pain and swelling and stiffness in the fingers that I didn't have before surgery.
Is it possible, or common, for an RA flare to be the result of surgical trauma? Anybody know, or have had similar results? Thanks, Loretxxx

Nice to see you back on site. Are you off your Rheum meds ? I think it is. Possible to flare post op, my surgeon fr ankle said that is why he kept me on meds all thru, because of risk of flare.
I hope this is not the case, and it probably just stiff, and the other wrist maybe compensating pain? Worth a phone call to Rheumy?
Was the op a success? Was it a fusion?

I did not have to dc any of my meds, thank heavens.
Won't know how successful it has been for awhile yet, as OT is still working on getting the wrist back to active range of motion. It is progressing on that score. The noticeable factor is no pain! The sugical pain is gone, except for some stabs when it gets in a position it is not yet ready for. I think it will be successful, once I am done with the rehab.
I did call the Rheumy, he's on leave for back surgery, but his nurse told him I called, he would order Prednisone if I want it. I do not want to go there, it screws up my blood sugars too much. I think I remember that steroids do slow healing in the bone, so I will pass and just continue with the OT. Lxx

I can't answer the question about whether it's an RA flair or not. The only thing I can say is when I had knuckle surgery on my right hand I was told to keep my hand elevated (in bed and when I was sitting down) apparently some people have swelling after hand surgery and some dont, elevating it helps reduce the swelling apparently - maybe this applies to wrist surgery as well. Also, because I was using my left hand most of the time my left hand and wrist were more sore because it was doing all of the work.

Thanks Judi, I did have to keep it elevated, all the time for the first 3 weeks, had a sling to wear when I was up walking.
There has been a pink area over the edge of my wrist, where part of the ulnar bone had been removed, but it is fading away now.
Maybe the left hand is sore because I am using it more, Lxx
Hi Loret, would not know, but when I had my knee operated on my foot swelled up and went black, it took a while to settle down. Take things easy Loret, rest and tae care. Paula x
Sorry Loret don't know but offer my sympathy and hope it settles down.
Loretta, could it be due to you having to use your other hand more than you have used to. It could be a flare up,is your other joints painful,if so that would explain everything for you.
Don't over do it lovely loretta,i know i'm the worst one to be saying that as i always go and over do it don't i. I will be taking it easy today as i ache.

Hi Sweet Sylvi, You are most likely right, I was just wondering if surgeries can precipitate a flare, especially in that area. The pink area conderned the OT also, but today it does seem to be fading a bit.

Hi Loretta, I had surg. on my right hand last yr & the Dr did tell me that one reason my left was hurting is because I had to do more with my left. I pray that you feel better soon. Gentle Hugs. God Bless Linda
Thanks ladies, I did figure my left hand was complaining from over use, but was concerned about the pink area over the ulnar excision site. The incision is on the top of my forearm. anyways, consensus is, it's probably not a flare.
OT says I am making progress every time I am there--3 days a week, so I will keep on going. Enjoy the warm temps, ours is leaving later today when some storms move in! Lxx

Hope the pinkness fades fast and you have 2 pain free hands - can't advise on post-op as only ever had a knee done that was a breeze, but I love the bug rock so also hope you get back painting v soon. Px
According to Mr. Weather: This warm front will travel on out past our east coast, so might get to you, but only for a day or so. Behind it is the cold front and storms, tornadoes, etc!! seems we always have to pay dearly for having a nice warm day!

Here it's North Easterly gale force winds and raining - typical on the day that I happen to be sailing across the Pentland Firth for an hour and a half (on a good day!) and then being driven for six hours along hairpin bends of the A9 down to Stirling!
Can't advise at all on your wrist problems Loret but I think it it was flaring up it would probably be more painful - what do I know though only had RA for a year or so! Lots of hugs though and keep going to the OT. TTx
