On coronavirus (COVID-19) boosters, the Joint Committee on Vaccination and Immunisation (JCVI) has now published its final recommendations for this autumn’s programme.

Under the advice, those eligible for a further dose will be:

all adults aged 50 years and over

those aged 5 to 49 years in a clinical risk group, including pregnant women

those aged 5 to 49 years who are household contacts of people with immunosuppression

those aged 16 to 49 years who are carers

residents in a care home for older adults and staff working in care homes for older adults

frontline health and social care workers

In addition, the Department of Health and Social Care (DHSC) will be widening the offer of the free flu vaccine to more eligible groups. These additional groups will only be eligible once the most vulnerable, including previously announced pre-school and primary school children, those aged 65 years and over and those in clinical risk groups, have been offered the jab.

The additional groups set to be offered the free flu vaccine in England will be:

all adults aged 50 to 64 years

secondary school children in years 7, 8 and 9, who will be offered the vaccine in order of school year (starting with the youngest first)

The NHS will announce in due course when and how eligible groups will be able to book an appointment for their COVID-19 autumn booster, and when people aged 50 to 64 years old who are not in a clinical risk group will be able to get their free flu jab.

People in these groups are asked not to come forward until further information is announced.

I don't understand the reasoning behind giving boosters for an old virus? This isn't done for flu! New strains different jab. How can this be good for the immune system? Isn't it just driving variants to become more infectious?

I have never understood the ‘reasoning’ behind a ‘jab’ that is ineffective.

I'm glad I'm not the only one! I haven't got a straight answer yet. If you ask people they glaze over. Why are people still being boosted for the original strain? I'm no genius but I can't see anything good coming from this. But what the heck do I know!

I thought we were supposed to be having covid and 'flu jabs at the same time . Different arms , obviously. 🙄 Has this changed now ?

I thought they were to be at the same time by your own doctors surgery , but the latest release is not clear just they are to be offered in Autumn to the necessary groups. Of course the Covid booster will include everyone upto the age of 75 as those over 75 have mostly received a request to book for a booster. Those with health issues and over 65 s already get the flu vaccine so I presume they will still get their normal recall. It does suggest you will be contacted to book . In my case I will be watching my doctors web site as I have already had 3 injections for Covid and have been having flu injections since before I was 65. Fingers crossed it goes smoother than it seems for all.

I've had 5 jabs now ( 2 AZ , 1 Phizer and 2 Modernas .) I also get 'flu jabs . All due to age , RA and CEV . Unfortunately, none of them have coincided at the same time . The last was my Spring booster ( Moderna ) in April . I'm assuming I'll get 'flu and covid jab sometime , together , in Sept/Oct .

Yes the injections for both seem to be predicted for the time you suggest , in my case my last Covid one was in November last year. I have had two AZ , 1Phizer. My flu was done in October used to be September but moved because I had an operation and could not get to surgery. I am CEV but not immunsupressed and do not fit the over 75 criteria till next year. I know quite a few who have not been given the injections for Covid who are much older than 75 but possibly housebound which their GP is not aware of. take good care of yourself and stay cool.

So have you had Covid? We haven’t had Covid and no jabs. So far supplements like vit D, C, Zinc, Quercetin everyday for 2 years, no issues yet.

I had Covid December 2021, over Christmas. I'm pleased for you that you have kept well.
