Hi Eva. I was prescribed Metoject and Prednisone by my rheumy doctor and was also told to take Omeprazole because of the Pred so I would say, yes it's OK to take Lansoprazole with the Methotrexate.

It is something that can interact with MTX, but we generally have no choice and are well monitored to make sure it doesn’t affect us negatively.

The doctor who prescribed MTX to you knew you were on it presumably?

I have taken this combination for 11 years now with no problem.

I was on high doses of PPI’s when I was in Pred as it gives me terrible indigestion (I also have a hiatus hernia and GERD), but my liver tests was always elevated (I’m also on Mthx), my Consultant dismissed the interaction, but after doing research and chatting to my pharmacist I know there is an interaction. I’m now on a low dose of Lansaprozal and lo and behold my ALT is now down to 17, after being in the 40/50 for years 🤷‍♀️ I don’t drink and eat healthily, so I’m convinced it’s the interaction with Mthx.

But I’m sure it’s different with everyone, maybe I’m just sensitive to certain meds.

I took omeprazole daily for most of the time I was on MTX injections as I had a terrible stomach. The interaction between them should be minimal as the MTX is not going through your stomach. Although the GP and rheumy should know what you are already taking, I usually just remind them when they add a new drug or take one away to look at what I am taking and double check that the new mixture wont cause any issues. I have also found the local pharmacist to be brilliant for advice (as drug interactions really are their job). Also - when taking MTX, dont add in anything over the counter without speaking to the pharmacist - even some multi-vitamins are a no go as you will have been prescribed folic acid anyway and multi-vitamins invariably contain more and can result in you taking too much. Again, my local pharmacist goes away and checks his big books or the computer to tell me whats safe and whats not and can usually recommend a suitable over the counter treatment if needed.

I DON'T KNOW IF I CAN REALLY HELP YOU. I'VE TAKEN PREDNISONE AND MTX FOR ABOUT 9 YRS. NOW BUT NOT IN CONJUNCTION WITH ANYTHING ELSE .I THINK YOUR BEST BET IS TO CHECK W/ YOUR DOCTOR FIRST AND THEN IF HE SAYS YES, TRY IT OUT SLOWLY AND SEE HOW YOU REACT AND FEEL. SORRY I COULDN'T BE MORE HELP, IF IT WAS ONLY ABOUT MTX I COULD HAVE AT LEAST TOLD YOU ABOUT MY EXPERIENCE W/ THAT AND PRED. PLEASE EXCUSE CAPS -JUST EASIER FOR ME.

I was prescribed Lansoprazole, a low dose, for a few years after stomach issues developed with Methotrexate. When I changed to a mainly Vegan diet I found I didn't need Lansoprazole anymore. I also take Probiotics which help a great deal too.
