Methotrexate

Started methotrexate today. Praying for good results. I know it's vain, but I don't want to lose my hair. I'm getting married in May and I don't want to lose hair. It's thin already because of sulphasalazine and thyroid.

Fingers crossed the MTX works wonders for you ☀️ In terms of hair loss, if you take the folic acid as prescribed (assume this has been sorted for you) then you might find that hair loss isn’t too much of an issue. Some people also recommend adding in Biotin to help the hair further.

It’s not vain at all. Totally understand. You could always chat with your bridal hairdresser about some extensions for the day. They make some very natural looking ones that you can simply clip in to add volume xx

Hair loss doesn’t affect all of us. I was fine. It thinned a bit to start with, but that was all and it didn’t last long.

I hope so. Thank you

I hope you don't have any problems - it's not a given that you will lose hair with MTX as not everyone is the same so try not to worry as all that will do is stress you out and that won't help. I really hope all goes well for your wedding. Good luck. xx

You're not being vain, it's natural to worry. Just to say that I've had no hair loss with Methotrexate. It may well be caused by being ill and/or stress rather than medication so try to stay positive 😉

Are you on folic acid too? My hair thinned a tiny bit but only noticeable to me. It’s back to normal now. If you’re worried, you could try one of those thickening shampoos, although not cheap. I used to use Nioxin. :)

She did give me folic acid also. And she did mention nioxin. I'm so glad to know these work!

Many years ago, my hair got very thin due to non RA related stuff. Nioxin shampoo and conditioner was my life saver and my hair did repair. I use regular hair products now. All the best for your wedding, so lovely to have something to look forward to. :)

Don’t worry.....I took it for 7 years & didn’t lose a single hair! Worst side effect was a metallic taste in my mouth..... & a peppermint sweet solved that!

Not vain!!! Self esteem, confidence...these are huge. I figure you are entitled to some bottom lines!!As others have said - take the folic acid, I hope you have it 6 days in the week rather than just 1 - this fixed my hair loss literally overnight.

Have a lovely gorgeous wedding!

I can honestly say I haven’t noticed any hair loss at all since taking 12.5 mg of mtx for the last 5+ years.

I started Methotrexate again in October after a gap of many years and haven’t or never had any hair loss previously when I took it so try not to worry x

my hair was fine to begin with, I rarely take the Folic Acid as it gives me the runs. However even though the texture is fine, I still have enough to good Ok, so try not to worry...mind you I am 84!!

I've taken MTX for over 40 years (dx. 1971 as a child). The only time I suffered hair loss was after major surgey, resulting in infection requiring blood transfusions etc. - it wasn't MTX! Not everyone gets side effects on MTX.

Hi, like others here I’ve been taking MTX in different measures, high & lower as needed for 10 yrs, no hair loss at all. But I do stick to a good healthy diet as I’m sure you do to. I use organic hair products only out of choice no other reason. Hope you start to feel better on the MTX so you can enjoy your special day to the full, all the very best to you.

When I was on MTX, my rheumy told me to take biotin, a b vitamin, which i took alongside my B12. I still take them though I stopped MTX two years ago. I also use a shampoo with biotin in it. I think it helped me. Good luck with the MTX.

Not a vanity on your part hair apparently is our " crowning glory ".In my case when I developed RD/A lost loads of my hair so megga thin when I started MTX.

Since, it's grown fairly well, I have enouch so it's not thin looking.

I do last hair rinse in cold water when washing my hair, no idea if it helps but a tip I read.

Agree with suggestions made by others to talk with hairdresser for tips.

Have a lovely wedding day
