Off topic - toe nail treatment update

I said I'd report back, so here it is.

My self diagnosis was almost certainly wrong, as the podiatrist never mentioned the words "ingrowing toe nail" once.

My problem was on the left foot big toe, with nail growing off to the left, and feeling uncomfortable, potential fungal infection.

She hacked it around further (I had already chopped chunks of it off), and said it was build up of nail pressing into the nail bed. Left hand end of the nail was kinda enlarged. She used a proper industrial looking pair of pincers/pliers/cutter to cut it down. Might try and find something that strong! She smoothed off the ridging on it too, although I'm not sure whether that served anything but a cosmetic purpose. Net result - a substantially cut back and rounded off toe nail, which is feeling far more comfortable now and is unlikely to encounter the ends of my shoes and suffer pressure by that.

I hope that explains it, and sorry if it's too much detail. Cheers. Oh, and I'm pleased it wasn't ingrowing, and doesn't require further treatment although I'd be happy to go back to the podiatrist again if need arises.

Well done. I have a toenail exactly like that which the podiatrist sorts out every 8 weeks so that it does not become too uncomfortable.

That sounds way too frequent, I'd go broke. 🤪 I was thinking more like every 5 years!

Yes luckily my podiatrist calls it a short appt because that is all I need and charges £22. He is such a nice man, he said that he hates charging me because we have such a god conversation. Isn't that nice.

Since I have been on sulfasalazine I have had to have my nails shaved off the top as they grow like mad and are thick. I thought it was fungal but she said meds. Just another RAgift you need a pneumatic drill for toe nails. 😡

...and I never even knew that thick nails were a thing....!

Hi Hezekiah, going through the same thing, but mine is ingrowing. Had it cleaned and treated the other day, but going for partial nail removal which I'm dreading. I'm hoping it will get rid of it for good, good luck glad you got sorted as they are painful, mine is on right side of right big toe.

I think I performed partial nail removal on myself, as it was digging in and very uncomfortable. I hope partial nail removal won't be as bad as you think it is going to be. What do they say..something like "fear of the thing is worse than the thing itself" theodysseyonline.com/antici...

Maybe try to forget dread, and concentrate on visualising your happier, reduced pain future a week after the process has taken place.

Easy said, I know....

Yes the nurse told me that the worst part is having the two needles, to numb the toe just below the knuckle. Gulp! 😊
