120mg of Etoricoxib for 2 weeks to excessive ?

Hi everyone

I hope all this damp weather is not causing you too much pain, stiffness, and swelling ( roll on the summer, not to long now šŸŒž).

I have just been put on a course of 120mg of Etoricoxib for 2 weeks.

120mg seems very high and I have read on medical sites that 120mg should only be taken for a maximum of 8 days !

Now I realise that my Rheumy consultant understands what he is doing, but reading about the 8 days max thing has got me spooked.

Anybody else been put on 120mg of Etoricoxib before and for how long and if so what happened ?

Many thanks

Kind regards

shy

Thereā€™s usually a fair amount of wiggle room in these recommendations, especially as we are all so different. And they are guidelines, not absolute limits. Where things are really critical the guidelines are usually much more explicit and are covered with yellow triangles!

Iā€™ve never had 120mg - do you have gout?

However, if you are not comfortable with this then do question it. Doctors completely loathe patients who say ā€œIā€™ve read on the internet that....ā€ but itā€™s usually fine to say that you want to be sure that youā€™ve understood the prescribing instructions. Or to say you want to check that you should continue the full course if things have improved after a week. (Does it say for 14 days, or up to 14 days?)

You can also ask your pharmacist whether this is common ā€œas it seems a lot to youā€. And if you have already got the prescription you can point to the Patient Information Leaflet in the pack which should say prescribing dosages and times.

Or you can just stop taking them!

Thank you HHIt was my first clinic yesterday so they are still just trying to figure out what is wrong with me, so maybe trying to eliminate things like gout etc.

Scans are planned in for next week.

there are no warnings on the enclosed Patient information Leaflet about exceeding 8 days.

If I feel any adverse symptoms I will contact my Rheumy doctor without hesitation. !

Much appreciated.

Not sure if it helps but Iā€™ve been on 90mg coming up to a year, on the prescription label on the outer box it says try not to use it daily only when needed, however, back in April I didnā€™t think it was making any difference so stopped taking it, within a few days the pain came back worse, Iā€™ve taken it every day since & mentioned it to the rheumatologist who said itā€™s fine x

Thank you GarnachaIt's very comforting to hear that you have been on 90 mg for some time and are still ok and your condition is less painful than it might otherwise be.

Can I ask were you started on 90 mg or 120 and then dropped down to 90 mg.

Thank you so much for getting back to me.

Hi I was started on 90mg as well as hydroxychloroquine 200mg before the mtx in November of 15mg now up to 20mg, the rheumatologist told me to stop taking the hydroxychloroquine when I started on mtx but again within a few days the pain was horrendous so put me back on it, I started to also have a severe burning sensation in my left arm which he said was probably the inflammation pressing down on a nerve so now have to take gabapentin, I literally rattle šŸ˜‚ My husband was on 120mg of etoricoxib for about 3 months & was fine, hope this helps x

Yes it helps a lot, thank you so much I needed that reassurance.I do not know what hydroxychloroquine is as I am a newbie.

But I have taken Garbapentine before for a nerve problem in my back which really sorted that out.

Has your hubby dropped down to 90 mg now ?

Kind regards

I was on 120mg for several months and then someone noticed and I have been on 90mg now for about 4 years with no side effects as far as I am aware.

Hi shy. I have been on 90mg every day for about five years. No Iā€™ll effects and I can honestly say it had helped me significantly - alongside leflunomide, methotrexate and biologics.

Hand in heart, out of all my meds, it is the one I notice if I have forgotten to take.

Hope it all goes well for you and they can confirm a diagnosis, sooner rather than Later x

Thank you Eiram50Five years and no Ill effects is good news and although I am on 120mg for 2 weeks, I then drop down to 90mg.

May I ask, can you not just take Etoricoxib on its own or is it more complicated than that ?

Kind regards
