I had my first COVID vaccination yesterday. Have been on Humira (and now Imraldi) for over 12 years. No stopping of medication required. The COVID vaccination was the Pfizer one and apart from a bit of an achy arm today it was extremely straightforward. Best wishes.
Same as above for me...except I’m on Erelzi now...but that’s still a biologic...no problems at all and I consultant my rheumatologist before the vaccination and the doctor present at time of the vaccination. It was also stated in an NRAS Facebook live event that it’s safe...😊so pleased we can be vaccinated even if it’s not clear what the effectiveness is. Having had pneumo-vacc and flu vaccination and working as a physio in acute respiratory and intensive care I’ve never had flu or pneumonia since being vaccinated so I’m hopeful for the same with COVID 🤞🏻
This is what the British Society of Rheumatologists say - basically no-one yet knows whether pausing treatments for a week after the vaccine will help.
“Some immunosuppressed patients may have a suboptimal immunological response to the vaccine. The prescriber should apply clinical judgment to take into account the risk of COVID-19 exacerbating any underlying disease that a patient may have, as well as the risk of serious illness from COVID-19 itself.
Should rheumatology treatment be paused or changed?
We've been in touch with the JCVI for more on this, and will update as soon as more information becomes available.”
There hasn’t been a study as such about the vaccine being taken by people on immune suppressants. There is information on Crohn’s colitis uk about the vaccine and a video with doctors discussing the vaccine. I had the Pfizer vaccine 12 days ago, I’m on Amgevita and before that Humira both medications are the same. Before having my injection the doctor doing it explained to me that a normal healthy person having the vaccine would be protected around 90 percent and for people on immune suppressant s it would be around 60 to 70 per cent protection. I had a fuzzy head and chills the following day for a short while as well as my arm ached but nothing at all to be concerned about for me and it all disappeared after 2 paracetamol and a couple of hours at work 😁
I was told by the rhumatoid nurse to have a break from the injection a couple of weeks to allow the immune system to build up. Also that the vaccine may have less effectiveness but still worth having. X
