It's very very In depth. Goes into huge detail about when it's best to have vaccine but the main messages I got was:
Have the vaccine ! the ones passed are safe for RA patients . The oxford vaccine was a live vaccine that he have attenuated so we can have it therefore not a " live" vaccine when given.
Our drugs might alter the response to the vaccines but " most people will still mount a substantial response protection against catching the virus"
It discusses allergies, nd methotrexate and rituximab timings
If you need an op the consultant felt he would have the vaccine pre op if possible although a lot of ops are being stopped at present.
I really feel you should listen to the doctor talking about timing that might be possible for vaccine and various RA drugs .
This was excellent. Thank you for reminding us Allanah. 💗 Thank you to Clare and Nadine of NRAS and of course Dr Galloway. So helpful and informative. I hope that this encourages people who have had some doubts about being vaccinated and have been unsure if it is safe. I was grateful it answered a lot about Rtx and also Mtx, but as Dr Galloway said, we may need to clarify issues re allergies and timings re something like Rtx with our rheumy or GP. The encouraging part was that he says we should still get a very good response from the vaccine even if we are immuno-suppressed and enough to make it worthwhile having the vaccine. I shall be donating to NRAS to say thank you for all their advice and support. They are excellent.
I'm feeling a bit more confident in having the vaccine after listening to the event. What is evident is that knowledge of the safety and efficacy of the vaccine is progressing quickly.
Yes. There seems to be anxiety that research and trials generally take years and this has been too quick. We were reminded that there are many many research projects and trials ongoing at any given time, but this year Covid has been the worlds primary focus.
I thought it was an excellent webinar. Dr Galloway explained everything so well. I really feel so much better informed and any questions I had were answered perfectly with the right level of supporting detail.
Thank you so much for flagging this recording up as I have found it very informative re vaccine, allergies etc.Just one question.... does any one know how long Dr James’ waiting list is??? 😇
Just watched allanah, and very glad I did! Very informative and reassuring! I'll do exactly as he said and ask Rheumatologist again near the time, regarding stopping or not stopping methotrexate. I did speak to him last week and he didn't have a clear answer, which I understand as exactly as was said on the video, me being right at the start if my treatment and my RA being very active and not yet under control, a break in my meds may not be the best for me. But having the vaccine definitely is! Thanks again for this post!
I had a reply on the webinar to my question: is the Oxford vaccine live?Clare Jacklin replied:
'Live but different in that the 'live' virus is not one that can duplicate in humans and is only used as a delivery mechanism so the Oxford vaccine, once approved, will be able to be offered to those with RA.'
