Has anyone got confirmation that autoimmune RA patients and immunsurpressed can have this Pfiser vaccine ? Someone said it won't work as well but I just want to know at least we can have it.

We are all different and on various RA different medications too so the only safe answer is to contact your Rheumatologist.

We've put a statement on our website about the new Pfizer vaccine and, whilst it is very exciting news, there is no clarification yet from the BSR (British Society of Rheumatology) as to whether this particular vaccine will be suitable for those on immunosuppressants. nras.org.uk/news/nras-state...

Thank you I know NRAS will let us know asap I don't know what I would of done without NRAS in the last few months as no one else helps with advise, I was getting anxious about it as some say no some TV says yes but won't possibly work as well etc they keep saying only pregnant women can't etc.

A virologist answers questions on my local radio station every weekday morning, some one phoned in with a question I was thinking of asking.

The vaccine works by a persons immune responding to it, so what about people with a lowered immune system? He said that people on strong immune suppressants, did use the example of someone who had had an organ transplant, they should ask their hospital because it might not work for them,

A friend of mine who goes to the same hospital that I go to have asked our rheumatology department about the vaccine. The reply was they can't advise on it at the moment because they haven't got an information on it. Said just to wait till they know more about it,

Organ transplant patients are on hugely higher does of immune suppressants than we are. So I’m remaining positive that we’ll be able to have it - or another one when they roll out the programme.

You will be notified by your doctor when any vaccine programme is started in your area....which could well be after Christmas....so don’t worry about it....enjoy the holiday season. The decision as to which vaccine we will be offered will be in their hands,& I very much doubt if we will be given a choice...unless there is a known clinical reason why some people might not be able to have a certain vaccine.....we will be offered the one that has been provided to our doctor’s practice.

I think only the clinically extremely vulnerable are in the first stream. I guess that means those with extremely suppressed immune systems e.g. cancer patients on chemo, and those with severe COPD and heart problems. Otherwise, it has been shown that having RA does not dramatically increase your risk, so we may have to wait a while... I am ok with that.

Let the system and process roll out and wait and see.

Hi trace58, No I have heard nothing about us getting the vaccine or indeed if we can have it. I have my fingers crossed that it will be the same rule as for the flu jab so we can have it. My understanding is it is live vaccines that we all should avoid. No doubt we will hear soon.Keep well and stay safe.
