Anyone worried about rise in cases?

Hi everyone, hope everyone is well under circumstances. Just read that people may be asked to shield again as infections are rising. Im worried as being back in class im surrounded by sick children and school only opened a week and half ago. Parents are being ignorant and saying its an inconvenience to collect child if they are ill in school. Its proper madness. Im seeing rheumy Tuesday to discuss my biologic as Benepali stopped working 9 weeks into treatment and ive been on it for almost 25 weeks now. Oh well. Other than that im smiling through the pain x

Aww your poor thing these young ones are blind just want the kids out the way god bless you hope you get sorted it seems a lot of kids are sick my nieces kids are all sick she keeps saying it's just a cough and cold I'm like is it really tho...

Ms-D profile image
Ms-D in reply to Vonnie10

Thats the thing..everyone keeps saying its just a cold but how do you know its a cold as symptons are so similar🤔

in reply to Ms-D

Wouldn't you have a temperature or dry cough? The two main symptoms we were first told about....

Mmrr profile image
Mmrr in reply to

Yes, and or loss of taste / smell being the third symptom to raise concern and distinguish from a cold.

Yes I’m in the same position back st school 7 days . I work in a primary school... social distancing is s joke . 210 children in the school 12 children off as isolating. I’m not convinced Children can’t pass the virus on and my school is in the area where partial lockdown is happening because of dramatic rise in cases.

I’m on entanercept it is not working so about to start new medication.

Like you just getting on with it.

Ms-D in reply to

Im in year one and 90 kids in my year group bubble. Social distancing...whats that again??? No such thing and parents hound the gates like its a race after school. I almost got knocked out of the way last week. I hope it gets better for you with meds. Its a pain this waiting game x

in reply to Ms-D

My bubble is 120 ( I reduced my hours so there would be less contact) 60 infant,60 juniors.. I’m in contact with the whole school no PPE. Staggered starting times.. don’t make me laugh parents dump and run early or late. All my colleagues believe the children pass this virus on just like the flu. Negligible symptoms and mild illness no difference to covid.

We need to get our disease under control as we will be more vulnerable. X

Ms-D in reply to

I totally agree with you. Mr Johnson needs to help protect us or schools will suffer more. Ive got mask but useless as the kids cant hear you clearly and a visor just steams up. Its so silly x

in reply to Ms-D

It seems GPs are the only safe ones. My lot still not seeing any f2f ... oh unless you want a coil fitting.. good luck x

Mmrr profile image
Mmrr in reply to

Your comment made me laugh, no f2f ....unless you want a cool fitted 🤣😂

Seriously I would not like to be in your position within a school.

The government and its scientists have been careful not to say that children cannot spread the virus, just they think, or believe the evidence shows children under 11 to be much less effective at transmitting the virus than adults. That's my understanding of it.

Their carefully worded language gives them away doesn’t it. Just like shielding has ended ... if safe for you type words... return to work if covid safe to the shielding. Trust and faith in them got lost a long while ago.

To be honest anyone can get the virus but kids arent showing all the signs and they are not as badly affected. But if you are asymptomatic you are kind of lost in the system as you can have the virus without showing symptons and pass it around. Think my daughter learnt more at home than school.

By the way did you get tooth extracted?

wishbone profile image
wishbone in reply to Ms-D

I was booked in to have it looked at last friday, which would have meant having to go back again if anything needs doing. It stopped niggling soon after my post, so with the virus kicking off again I decided to take my chances and cancelled the appointment. Just hope it's the right decision.

If a child can get the virus with little or no ill affect to them then surely they can still pass it as the same they got it. I’m so confused especially when there have been reports of children ill with it despite not as many as adults. There is no social distancing at our school of 900!pupils and the bubbles are huge. My daughter had still had to hand out books and collect them all in and I really am not happy with this.

I do not understand the difference with kids being told not to meet up socially when you can meet up at school socially.

Add to the mix bullying where my daughter has kids literally in her face threatening and intimidating and pandemic 😡

For one I’m fed up hearing about all these contradictory rules, with no logic , we are all at risk be it some more than others but it’s a pandemic we are all at risk . Schools pass around every bug going as a known fact , I do not see how covid is any different, the affects on individuals may be different but prevention will be the cure, is that not why national lockdown introduced in the beginning.

I have no answers just some logical thinking. With a government who cannot it seems be trusted and word things to their liking rather than plain facts we are already on a losing battle.

Where school is concerned learning is the important factor not simply school, kids can learn through different avenues in digital age and in keeping teachers and pupils safe. Growing populations in schools and any illness is making the structure of schools needing looking at.

Not all kids Or parents are the same ,generalising is saddening, I do not just want to dump my child off far from it.

Hope you all keep safe

in reply to stiff19

Very well put .. wish more parents were like you. I too am a responsible parent . Unfortunately a growing number see us as baby sitters these same parents are the ones who’s children don’t do home work and are disruptive. Agree schools need to be smaller not just smaller classes.

My SIL sent my nephew (7) in to school when he’d had a high temp the night before 😔 what can I say. I’m still shielding on consultant and doc advice.

Ms-D profile image
Ms-D in reply to bubblyalex

Oh dear i hope hes okay. Its really a joke as a kid in my class was sent with headache, runny nose and cough and parents said hes making it up. I wanted to scream....

bubblyalex profile image
bubblyalex in reply to Ms-D

I’m sure he’s fine... it’s more that how does she know it isn’t covid and really it isn’t ok to send him in I’ll to spread the germs around... and especially with things being the way they are.

My area has had lockdown reimposed for the last 5 days, or is it semi-lockdown as it's not as strict as the first lockdown, so perhaps clampdown would be more appropriate. :-O :-) Anyway, my 8 year old grandaughter was sent home from school last week because a girl in her class has covid. She and both of her parents were tested on wednesday and had the results yesterday, which thankfully were all negative. My grandaughter and the rest of her class have to stay away from school for two weeks. Apparently the virus is continuing to increase in my area with a testing positivity rate of 4% on saturday, which is high enough for the Wishbone household to baton down the hatches once again rather than wait for the Welsh government to advise...........

Sorry to hear you are in pain and your med has stopped working as you need to have something to help you ASAP as you’re obviously doing a very busy job.

I’m shielding as I just had my Rituximab infusion this week but I’ve been shielding since end of Feb really (as was a avoiding getting a cold as I had a day op booked for 10 March and did not want to cancel) apart from a couple of blood tests and three very distanced days out to extremely remote places. I do think shielding will come back if the numbers rise out of control. It was inevitable the cases would rise with all the movement of people on holidays and not everyone being prepared to quarantine. It’s so upsetting some people won’t do the right thing for everyone .. just want they want to do for themselves. I think the next few weeks will be difficult with the Uni’s returning. It will be hard if they are sent home or to their accommodation and are made to learn by distance and have lectures again online etc. Hoping more people will be sensible and not make this even more difficult. Good luck with your rheumy appointment.

I've decided that I won't shield again, it was, and hopefully will be a recommendation, not an instruction again.

I live alone and my daughter is due to give birth to my second grandchild in November, I will try to support her in whatever little ways I am able to do and keep my f2f contact with others to what it is now, my 2 daughters and my partner, SIL and grandson.

That said I am meeting a friend for an outdoor coffee tomorrow, the first time I've done this type of thing.

I actually quite enjoyed shielding and didn't find it so difficult, but not for a second time over the winter months, living alone.

Pippy25 profile image
Pippy25 in reply to Mmrr

That has been my concern that if they do say we have to go into lock down and shield over winter months it would be a lot harder to do and also maintain. Although if we have to we'd have no choice really. It was lovely to hear about your daughter and I'm glad you have been able to support her in the best ways you can, so will keep my fingers crossed for you both for November and hope you can continue to support be with your grandchildren. xx

Yes, I live alone but am not lonely as I, pre Covid days, visited and had visitors, went out for lunch, attended open studies classes if able, saw my children and partner. But several months over winter in Scotland, where it is dark around 3.30 PM sitting at home with only zoom calls and none of the above is a no goer. Sheilding is unlikely to be mandatory, but a recommendation, so I will need to take a chance on limited, carefully chosen contact with others. We are in for a challenging winter.

Pippy25 profile image
Pippy25 in reply to Mmrr

Same here I live alone and while I don't mind being on my own pre covid days the choices were there to meet up with friends, go out etc. I try to get out as much as I can now but am restricted with my legs at the moment which have got worse so have to pick my moments. Living in the north, any potential for lock downs fills me with dread for the same reasons as you and I agree this winter will be a challenging one.

We all must do what we feel is right for our health and personal circumstances and no one should put pressure on us to go out or to stay in. We know what is right for us. 💗

Mmrr profile image
Mmrr in reply to Neonkittie17

Yes, so long as we abide by the instructions we are all free to do whatever pleases us.

Neonkittie17 profile image
Neonkittie17 in reply to Mmrr

Indeed! Sadly many people haven’t done as asked and it has a bearing of course on why we are why we are, but we can’t control what others do but we can do quite a few things still that we do and keep safe. I always have done what was asked of us as I wanted to help and try contain this sooner rather than later. Don’t think that’s quite happened, but I’ll carry on being careful and respectful. 💗

I have to shield after Rituximab last week and was told in no uncertain terms by my biologics sister is who is lovely (but stern!) I’m used to it now as I was doing a lot of my own shielding for the last three winters as Rtx gives me tendencies to pick up colds easily which can turn into solething more concerning. However it is very different deciding you’ll not go out socialising to avoid winter bugs and current scenario. I’ll shield again if needs be but I don’t live alone so understand why someone on their own would not want to. 💗

Hi Ms-D, I feel for you being a teacher with RA, a very difficult time for you. I hope your school is supportive.

Hope also that Rheumy find the right drug for you. I went through quite a few before we found the right one. Very, very good luck to you.

I would welcome shielding as I no longer feel safe. However my two teenage grandchildren live with me so don't know how I can shield or keep safe now we are forced to send them back to school. I feel no consideration has been made for the people who are vulnerable in the households with children. I feel the government is condemning me to death!

Angjoplin profile image

I think the rising numbers are a worry. But what's more of a worry is others ignorance. The amount of posts on Facebook i see from people saying to ignore all advice and just get on with life as normal is terrifying.

Hopefully even as case nunbers rise deaths remain low. We'll see in a couple of weeks i guess...

Mmrr profile image
Mmrr in reply to Angjoplin

Yes, I fail to understand why sticking to the instructions is so difficult. Ok , you can't meet in a restaurant/pub /wherever in large groups, so just do small groups for now, within whatever guidelines we are instructed to follow. Take a little care, plan ahead and go out and enjoy yourself, what is the big problem in the short term ? Try something new, within the permitted guidelines, something safe and different for you as an individual, explore and stay safe.

That way schools and other establishments, hopefully can stay open, people get a bit protection and the pandemic will be over sooner.

(I'll probably get roasted for this comment, but it is the way I feel)

Angjoplin profile image
Angjoplin in reply to Mmrr

I totally agree.

What happened to taking care of others. Is going to a concert really worth someone else's life?

Mind you. I am naturally unsociable. So not being allowed to meet in big groups is perfect for me. Plus it might even get me out of Christmas with the inlaws. Its win win for me. 😀

Mmrr profile image
Mmrr in reply to Angjoplin

😉😂🤣

Some people have had it really tough, loss of income, abused people and so on. I absolutely get that. My daughters friend and her husband are seriously struggling financially, both self employed, he is a sound technition for a recently set up childrens entertainment business and is receiving no financial aid and so end in sight to not being able to work. She has a small cake making business which only brings in a small income. Being able to only mix in small groups has had the knock on effect of people only ordering small cakes too, so her small income has been an even smaller one recently.

But being asked to socialise in smaller groups and take care isn't a big ask for many. My personal experience has been the more affluent members of my family have been the most vocal about how restricted their lives have been and how difficult they have found it. They too have been the ones to break the instructions on many occassions, whilst they previously, pre Covid, have been very vocal about others minor infringements of the law. I see not abiding by pandemic instructions as more than a minor infringement, but there you go. Rant over.

I’m in if it’s no in-laws for Christmas 😁😂

At my husbands school children all kept in bubbles until break when they all hug each other. When he gets home it is straight in shower and clean clothes. He has never been so clean and sweet smelling!

I think shielding is round the corner but we all know we can do it now. My family all live around the country so we have planned a meet up when it is all sorted. 😎

I do hope your appointment goes as well as it can tomorrow for you Mrs D and a way forward can be found for tug treatment wise.

It is so concerning about the rise in cases yet very little appearing to change generally to reduce cases. I live in an area where we have been given extra local lockdown measures for a few weeks now. Cases are tripling by the week still so clearly measures are not effective! Thinking of you. x

It must be very distressing to be surrounded by little ones with their seasonal, varied and multiple coughs and sneezes... They just get everything. Parents should be more understanding though.

I am fed up of people thinking this pandemic is an inconvenience or worse a conspiracy.

Personally, I doubt that many of us will be shielded again. It would be much more targeted.

I had a video Rheumy consult yesterday. There are more fears for people on heavy steroids than for those on Biologics. I have refused steroids. The Biologics we take have been found to be 'possibly' beneficial in supporting a good immune response to Covid whereas steroids suppress the immune response. So, if we are otherwise healthy, we wouldn't be in the 'shielded' category again. I am pleased to say that I am otherwise healthy.
