Hyroxychloroquine and rashes

I posted a querry on the Lupus UK website about HYRD and photosensitivity and two kind people replied. They have a definite diagnosis of Lupus. I wondered if anyone else on this forum with RA or inflammatory arthritis had also experienced a rash (just on cheeks) a few hours after being outside on cloudy day whilst on HYDRX. I know it can cause photosensitivity but kind of assumed that it wouldn't appear preferentially just on the cheeks but on all exposed skin. Has anyone else who has not been diagnosed with Lupus also experienced photosensitivty with this drug and if so how did it manifest itself. Kindest wishes to all as ever. x

Hi I started taking hydroxychloroquine in March this year and I developed a rash on very specific area - on front of lower legs below my knees and above my ankles.

My rheumatologist asked for a photograph which he sent to dermatologist. The advice was that it was due to photosensitivity and to stop taking hydroxychloroquine immediately.

I have not had this since - but do keep well covered up even if cloudy.

coincidentally I developed a small lesion on arm that wouldn’t heal at the same time and I have just had skin biopsy and I am waiting for results

It really is a minefield isn't it. I would dread having to stop HYD as was intolerant to MTX and LEF. The reaction I described has now happened on three seperate occassions. Mug shots are now with Rhuematologist. I do so hope that your skin biopsy comes back with the all clear. x

Hi it’s difficult isn’t it? and I guess everyone reactions different - I take methotrexate and humira now both subcutaneous and don’t seem to have any adverse reactions as yet.🤞🤞

hope you can get settled too but your reaction could be different to mine - good news about pics hopefully can move forward when they see rash - all my skin issues dealt with via pics and telephone consultation with dermatologist

Thanks for kind thoughts re skin biopsy

At least it is being dealt with x

I don’t know about meds photosensitivity but I have always sunburnt easily and places like my cheeks, top of chest centre, knees and a few other places have always been the first to go red hot, inflamed and burnt.

Poor you! I've been OK until recently. My arms etc are fine - just the cheeks!! Ho hum, another waiting game is on the way methinks. x

Quite possibly. I hope it clears up for you though. 😊

Ah thank you. I find watching my body reveal these little secrets quite disturbing and can become all encompassing. Just want it all out in the open so I know whats what and how to deal with it. Never could deal with suspense - I'm the type who has to scan the back page of a thriller to check that favourite characters make it to the end. x

😁 doesn’t doing that spoil the suspense though?

No! Just scan for the name - am then able to deal with the suspense. Mind you I still can't watch Bambi or Dumbo - there's no hope I know. x

I developed the same rash as Piwacket on my legs the first summer I was on HydroxyC. Not happened again since and I am still talking it five years later. Nothing on my face but I always use SPF cream.

It can be very itchy and uncomfortable, so I hope it resolves quickly for you.

Take care

Yes, thankfully by the morning I am left with just rosy cheeks but feel exhausted. It's over to the Rhuemy team now to come up with the explanation. I'm sure they are fed up of my mug shots. So glad yours has resovled over time and you are still able to tolerate HDY. Kindest thoughts.x
