No question is silly with this disease.

But could be either or both! My disease is generally very well controlled, but I know when it is starting to get active as for example my morning stiffness is worse, and I have grumbling joints. If I don’t pay attention and look after myself a bit better then I will flare and get hot, red and swollen joints.

But we are each different so could be different for someone else.

Active means pain and mobility problems over a long period of time . I don’t get any relief. It tends to build up . A flare I get no warning and feels like a tsunami hit me often accompanied by major fatigue. I’m totally wiped out physically and mentally. These tend to be shorter lived . Took me a while to work it out

I thinks people can interpret these words differently. I can’t remember how the NRAS defines/explains them but you could have a look on their website and that of the British sSociety of Rheumatology (what the clinicians use).

Either way, active or flare, if it’s causing you problems it may mean you need adjustments to your medication.

If you are having lots of flares it's a sign that the disease is not under control. But when starting medication then it may take time to get the disease under control.
