Strange lump at side of toe.

Good day to you all. I wonder if anyone has seen or got anything like this lump that had come on the side of my big toe? I had a toe joint replacement there five years ago which improved things but I still get some pain there and my big toe and the one next to it have drifted over a bit.

I have noticed this lump over a few months now and my husband said perhaps it is part of the joint replacement that has moved over, but I think that is unlikely. It is hard and doesn't hurt at all even when pressed. I am seeing the podiatrist in a few weeks so I will ask her what she thinks, but I just wondered if anyone on here has any ideas.

Thank you for answering me J1707. I will wait to see if anyone else knows what it might be.

Your husband could be right...might be something to do with the shoes you have been wearing...constant pressure can cause lumps & bumps.

I am not quite sure what you mean AgedCrone because my husband didn't say anything about my shoes etc. He said it might be caused though my joint replacement that I had five years ago but nothing about it being my shoes.

He said it might be the “joint replacement had moved over “ which is doubtful, but If shoes constantly press on a joint ...after a time that could cause a build up of tissue ....I had a scarfe osteotomy surgery on bunions on both feet about 9 years ago & they are still OK.

I’m sure your podiatrist will know the answer.

Thank you for explaining this AgedCrone.

Hi. Looks like a rheumatoid nodule to me. Google it. I had a really big one in the same place which was removed when I had a bunion op. I have a number of others that do and don’t bother me. These little beggars can be removed with success or they might just come back. Talk to your GP or rheumy or nurse. You’re obviously concerned, If it’s not bothering you, they can put your mind at rest that there’s nothing sinister. I have a few that grow quite big and then go right down. I have no idea why. They’re a flippin’ nuisance sometimes. The ones in the balls of my feet are at their biggest at the moment and I have to wear my most spongy footwear. I know they will shrink down again within a week or two so I don’t stress about them any more. If you have a rummage round your joints, you’re likely to find more. They might be really tiny. It’s very common.

I agree- rheumatoid nodule. I have one in the same place on my foot. Can’t stand the weird things that come along with RA!

in reply to Hisue

Thank you Hisue. For some reason my husband keeps saying it is all to do with the new toe joint I had five years ago, but from what others are saying and from what I have looked up online, I think it is more likely a rheumatoid nodule.

Thank you for your answer Esmereld. It sounds very like a rheumatoid nodule to me. I am seeing the podiatrist very soon and will see what she says, but if she doesn't know I will show my GP. I don't have an appointment with the rheumy or nurses until May.
