They have telephone volunteers, so perhaps question to ask is whether any of their volunteers has had a hip replacement at a young age? You son might find it helpful to talk to someone who has been through the same experience?
JIA might not be able to help as I read your son’s age as 12, not 21! But no harm in asking...

My brother in law had had both his hips replaced at a hospital in Barlborough, which is near Chesterfield, just off the M1, he can't praise it enough. I think it was a private hospital but now they do NHS joint replacements. They only do replacements so there's not a risk of having your op cancelled at the last minute due to a bed shortage. I know someone who is there today for an appointment for having her hip replaced. She's got RA and does post on here so I'll ask her to tell you what she thinks.

I'm Paula's friend who was at Barlborough today, I saw Mr Mersich. Brilliant experience, assessment and pre op all done in one go. Running late and was given a voucher to get coffee whilst we waited. I've had a total farce with MSK hub,who decides who treats you and I would have been all done and dusted well before Christmas if they had referred me here instead having to get my GP to complain. Mine should be done in roughly 8 weeks too. Xx

Sorry didn't see you had replied. I lost movement 8 years ago but a registrar just said it's probably bursitis so was left. It was only when it became really painful that I spoke to my rheumy who x-rayed it. 10 months after my initial x-ray ,it was rechecked at preop and it's gone up into my pelvis so more complicated painful surgery plus 6 weeks on crutches not 2-4 as usual. Has to be pulled down and tightened up more. Have you managed to get a referral.
That sounds really painful & like you have been through a difficult time. I really hope your op goes well - it will be worth it.
We have a referral to Mr Thomas in Birmingham end of March - he seems to deal with young adults, so fingers crossed! 😌

Have you tried the Royal National Orthopaedic Hospital in Stanmore?
They will probably be able to advise you of any surgeons who perform this surgery near your location.
I’m sure you know this surgery isn’t usually performed on somebody so young as the lifespan of the replacement is such that it would need repeating at a still early age.
A cousin of mine had it done when he was 38...but he had to get it done privately.
Thank you. Yes, we went to Stanmore & in an effort to be helpful they referred us to a hip specialist for young adults in Sheffield. Sadly, we got there & found he was semi retired & only doing routine, private ops, not the more complex ops.
But it maybe worth contacting Stanmore again & see what they suggest 😊

I can highly recommend Mr Andrew Thomas at the Royal Orthopaedic Hospital in Birmingham. I had both my hips replaced in my late twenties, and had a fantastic outcome with the amazing team at the orthopaedic hospital. Eighteen years later and my hip replacements are still fantastic.
Thank you for that - gives me hope! I will check out Mr Thomas. Can I ask at what point they were prepared to operate? The message seems to be when it becomes really painful & he is struggling to do the normal everyday stuff. He has already gone through so much.
Mr Thomas runs a combined clinic with Rheumatology at the QE Birmingham so has an interest in patients with such conditions. I saw him at the Combined Clinic at the QE Birmingham in November and have been waiting for a second appointment at the ROH. Originally it was arranged for 21 Feb but its just been brought forward to this Friday. I need a total knee replacement as my right knee is apparently 10 degrees out of alignment and the left 5-10 degrees out. I've been on crutches for months as have severe issues walking much distance. I'm apparently considered an urgent case due to the issues. I'm not quite 50 so had some concerns that I may have issues getting the op as some CCGs apparently restrict knee replacements for under 50 years old but so far no issues and may not be with the CCG (I live in Birmingham).

Best of luck with your knee operation.I was 38 when I had both knees replaced and had to push for that as I was under 50. Hope yours goes well.
My hips were totally destroyed from very aggressive disease and I was wheelchair bound so it was a no brainer for Mr Thomas. But he does alot of hip replacements for young people and is the best surgeon to advise. Has your son tried all of the other options i.e physio, hydrotherapy, steroid injection, painkillers ? Mr Thomas advised that if I look after my hips they can last up to 30 years.

My son had a septic hip, followed by an AVN , then an osteotomy - initially did Pilates, hydro etc which all helped but also has a leg length difference as a result of AVN & now several years later is struggling. He is ltd with what painkillers he can take, so its like where do we go from here...Thanks for taking the time again to reply & well done you - amazing!!!
Oh that is so challenging for your son, the pain must be terrible for him. I really hope you can find a way forward with hip surgery and I wish you both the very best.
Hope you don't mind me contacting you again but in the end I went for Mr Thomas & my son is seeing him 20 March. Really pleased but also dead anxious!! Any advice please? 😌
So pleased you have an appointment with Mr Thomas. He is such an amazing surgeon and deals with complicated surgeries. Write a list of your concerns down to ask Mr Thomas, hope your son doesn't have to wait too long for surgery, there is nothing worse than been in pain and waiting a long time. I can honestly say having hip replacements took all of that agonising pain away once the wound had healed.
Sending positive thoughts for you both, things can only get better. It is an anxious time, it helped me to focus on all the positive things I would be able to do afterwards.

It's completely normal to feel so nervous, you will look back when it's all over and wonder how you got through it. But it's amazing how much strength we have inside to cope with challenges. Your son is so lucky to have someone who cares about him so much. I am sure he will be able to enjoy all the activities in a few months time, he will need you to remind him to do all of his physio exercises, that is key to a successful outcome.
Thank you - I really appreciate what you said - that was so kind of you. I keep reminding Joseph about how important the exercises will be in helping him recover. He did 18 months of Pilates after his osteotomy & you are spot on about how crucial the rehab is for a successful outcome. I just want him to do the normal, everyday stuff he enjoys - gardening, going for a walk & exploring, crazy golf!!
Mr Thomas sounds exactly what we need as Joseph is complicated! And it is reassuring that you had such a good outcome after what must have been a really difficult time for you 😊 Through the tunnel!
Yes it was a difficult time but I just had full confidence in Mr Thomas and his fabulous team that they would do everything possible to help me back on my feet again after a prolonged time been in a wheelchair.
I have everything crossed for Joseph, hope there are better times ahead for you both. It would be really interesting to hear how things go.

My husband at 47 had a hip resurfacing (partial replacement) done by Dr Philip Shaylor 7 years ago who’s NHS base is at Wolverhampton and Cannock trust hospitals I think... you can google his name and read up on him. He was fantastic and my husband couldn’t speak highly enough of him and his follow up care. He had his surgery done at Cannock which is only a small hospital compared to Wolverhampton. My husband ran his first ever half marathon last year at age 54 . Wishing all the best for your son.

He has psoriatic arthritis in both hips, very painful, but since having his one hip done the other has calmed down and he no longer gets the debilitating back pains he use to have. No further surgery required at this point in time. The half marathon was the first running he’d done in 30 years so his hip replacement has definitely enhanced his life. All the best for your son.
I am sure you understand how alone & helpless you can feel when someone you love is struggling & in pain but I cannot tell how much it has helped that people have taken the time to reply & share their amazing stories & offered hope!! Thank you.

Can't recommend anyone near you but Mr. Velayudan in Kent was fabulous. Had mine done 2 years ago at the age of 40 so not "young young" but young for a hip replacement. Blogged my way through the experience too and plan to do a 2 year update on the blog soon also. It's worth preparing him mentally for it as for me the first few weeks after were emotionally tough and I wasn't expecting that. I even questioned why on earth I'd decided to go through with the operation. But by around the 6 week mark, I had no regrets. So just prepare him to be patient with recovery. Wishing him all the best.

There's a younger girl (20s/30s) in Canada I think, on instagram and blogs called "younghipandbionic" and she's a massive source of inspiration for what is possible post-op - she's had both hips done from hip dysplasia but has returned to things like major sporting events and figure skating!!!

Hi, I had my left hip replaced when I was 24, I'm now 33, I had a surgeon from Sheffield (trying to find out which one) I was terrified! But one of the best things I have ever done! The recovery wasn't as bad as I thought it would be, up on my feet the day after surgery. I'll find out who I had and let you know 😊

Do you mind me asking how 'bad' your hip was when they agreed to do it? We keep being told it is about pain & not being able to do normal day to day tasks but how is that acceptable for a 21 year old!!
No not at all, I was really quite bad, I had a constant limp and every day was a bad day 😔 it's taken me all day to finally remember my surgeons name, it was Professor Wilkinson. I was under Royal Hallamshires for my RA. I agree its absolutely no life for a 21 year old, it took/has taken so much from me. He did a brilliant job of my hip and would definitely recommend him.

Yes - Birmingham keeps coming up....I think it is important that my son is under a team that understands & can empathise with how rubbish it is to be 21 & in pain & limping & not able to do 'normal' stuff!! Anyone in particular @ B'ham that you've heard of?

I had my first one done at 27 by mr knowles at royal lancaster infirmary hes done my knee replacement too hes been absolutely brilliant with me and my second knee will also be under him I wouldn't want anyone else hes very understand and genuinely cares for his patients I do believe he also works from the BMI hospital in lancaster hope you find someone who can help and you feel happy and confident in
Also just to add wrightington hospital in Wigan is a specialist hospital in hip replacement surgery as it's where it was first invented would highly recommend checking out

Sorry, not replied earlier, only just seen your reply - thank you. My son also had an osteotomy 7 years ago. Is there a reason they are not going straight for a hip replacement? Who will you be under? I am now looking at Mr Thomas in Birmingham for my son - he is obviously similar age to yourself (nearly 22).

I am 3 weeks post hip arthroscopy under my current surgeon Mr Gaston (Edinburgh) but am seeing a Mr Bankes in London. I think they PAO is so that when I do get hip replacement everything will be in the right place.
Good luck for finding a surgeon for your son. If I end up having surgery in London it is going to be a logistical nightmare.
