A tad off tioic

Hi all

Hoping everyone is as good as they can be today.

Just looking for a little advice....

Today, I had my gallbladder removed and no matter what I do, I cannot get comfortable in bed (hence my texting) but also, the normal painkillers I take, dehydrocodeine , are not touching the pain so do any of you kind souls have any idea what I could do/ use to ease the pain and allow some sleep?

Thank you in advance.

Marie

Oops! Clearly should have read ‘off topic!’

I think trying to sleep is pretty on topic!

It’s weird, but I find that having pillows down the length of my body to hug can be comforting. It doesn’t take pain away obviously, but it somehow makes it bearable.

Hope you recover soon.

Thank you HH- I’ll give it a bash.

I hope you've had some sleep. I have no bright ideas re pain. I do know though that patients get sent home very soon after surgery compared with how it used to be. I know of several people recently who were in a lot of pain at home but would have had the pain addressed in hospital. I hope you are soon more comfortable.

I think I’ve had maybe two hours total. I’ll get used to the different pain, I’m sure but thank you

Dear Marie I’m pleased to hear you have finely had your gallbladder op, I wish I could offer some ideas for pain relief, like Stayloose says, in hospital a morphine shot would have been given, and like Ajay suggests please contact your GP for suitable short term relief for you, or ring the ward. The pain will wear off not much help at the moment. All best wishes for a quick recovery. X

Hiya Marie. Sorry to hear of your needing gallbladder surgery & the pain you’re now in. I can only think to ask your GP for something to help you through recovery, maybe a call would be all that's needed. Sleep is important in recovery & if the pain is stopping that then you need something that works, clearly what you have isn't helping.

Hope you feel much better soon. x

I only had the surgery yesterday so I know that it’s par for the course. I’ll try sleep again tonight and if it’s no better, I’ll contact the gp.

I think perhaps my mood doesn’t help. I only had air he eh in my left wrist a matter of weeks ago and I have the other wrist to have done plus both ankles are being replaced. You can just get a bit fed up with surgery, can’t you?

Anyway- onwards and upwards!

Hope you and your husband are well x

Heck, yes, I’d forgotten about your wrists. My goodness you will be fed up with surgery... it'll have an impact on recovery & how well you cope with it all too especially with more to come. I feel for you. I hope you sleep better tonight but do see if your GP can offer something if not.

I'm not too bad, thanks for asking. My h is another thing altogether but hey ho, we thank goodness for small mercies. x

Thank you NMH.

Listen, I think myself relatively lucky, I know things could be a whole lot worse. Just every now and then, it all gets a little tiring, doesn’t it?

Glad things are not too bad for you and wishing the best for your other half.

X

That's what I like Marie, there’s always a glass half full with you, even though you have need of ops. You & Sophie never let it drag you down, or show it here. I think you're entitled to have a grumble but you don't, other than saying your mood doesn’t help, I'm lost without my sleep, I get grumpy! x

When I had my gall bladder out the actual op didn’t hurt but the muscles down one side including my arm and shoulder were excruciating ( I have a high threshold for pain) I ended up in AE. My friend is an anaesthetist she told me we are lift and twisted and yanked with little sensitivity and probably pulled the muscle. An Epsom salt bath could help to bring out the bruising and reduce swelling. Hope you feel better soon

I can imagine. Although I had keyhole, there was a bit of trouble with my liver and as such, I have a cut sort of at the front of the cleavage that really hurts!

A bath..... I’d sorely love one! I haven’t had a bath for years. After having both hips and both knees replaced, I found I was thereafter unable to get in and out of the bath so I have a wet room now.

Still, can’t complain 😀

in reply to Eiram50

🥺🥺 I would complain 😁

Hi Marie

You have plenty of pain to contend with then this too; something like hydrocodone prescription would surely be routine after such surgery? It is major, even by keyhole. And with the liver complication and incision you describe, I’d feel it was negligent to send you home so soon and without pain relief.

Please do try to get some suitable post operative pain relief prescription, if you tolerate such drugs. I’d hate to know you were suffering until at least Monday or ending up at A&E! Take care of yourself. 🙂

Thank you charisma. That’s very kind of you.

I take dehydrocodeine (8 tabs) every day and this is what they sent me home with- I think it’s not doing anything much as I’m so used to taking it?

I know I’ll hurt for a few days but it just seems a thousand times worse when you can’t sleep? I’ll see how I go tonight and if I still can’t sleep with the pain, I’ll contact the gp.

Thank you x

Is that drug something you have been taking anyway? If so, could be true that it may not be effective ... but there are others to try. 🙂

Yes I take the pain killer everyday. It probably isn’t enough but I just realised I have oxycodone too so I’ll take this. Thank you for your support

Hi Eiram can relate to your predicament as 2 years ago I had mine removed, they couldn’t do it keyhole and it ended up very messy with sepsis, an E. coli bug and 9 perforated abscesses on the gall bladder, 17 days later I was home and fighting fit with a lovely scar, just take things nice and easy and plenty rest, sending hugs xxx

Good lord! Another moan won’t leave my lips!!

That must have been horrendous for you. Glad you came through it all and thank you for the hugs!

Oh poor you, Marie. Your body has taken a battering.

If your body is used to a certain drug, it may not be as effective for acute pain. Hopefully you’ve got something extra to take the edge off on top of your “usual” (eep!) pain. Did you get any sleep last night? Gentle hugs xx

Hi Sophie

I think I maybe passed out through sheer exhaustion, for maybe an hour. I’d forgotten I have oxycodone in the house so I’ll take this before bed and hopefully, it’ll give me some relief and I’ll drop off.

Hoping things are as well as they can be with you? I know things were tough x

Your body is probably confused after the anaesthetic too. I’ve heard some people get wacky sleep patterns. Really hope tonight is better for you. Fingers crossed.

I’m plodding along, back at work, albeit part time and it’s manic but good for me. :) you know what it’s like and I always get stuck on duty on a Friday so I’m glad it’s the weekend!

Take care and hope the meds give you the sleep and healing your body needs xx

I love duty on a Friday as 3.45 finish!

Thanks Sophie. You take care too x
