Hi Everyone. Just a quickie! My husband took two of our dogs to the vet yesterday for their annual boosters. They asked him if anyone in our house was immuno-suppressed. My husband told them that I was & that I’m on Methotrexate. She wouldn’t give them the Kennel Cough vaccine as it’s live & they squirt it up their noses!! (😂😂 try that with a labradoodle 😂😂). She said I should ask my GP first!
As luck (!) would have it, I had to have an appointment later because I had a sore throat. I saw an emergency doctor who told me it was tonsillitis & gave me antibiotics. I asked him about the Kennel Cough & he laughed as though he’d never heard anything so stupid & wouldn’t even look at the leaflet the vet had given me. He said I should speak to my own doctor!
Thoughts anyone? I think everyone is covering their own backs, personally!

Thanks. I’ve just read all those comments. It’s odd that this has just been brought to light. It makes you think you never want to set foot in a vets ever again. I certainly wouldn’t want to be around mad Ralphie, our labradoodle, when he’s having his done. His main aim in life is to do battle with the vet, especially if she tries to squirt anything up his nose!! 😱😂😂 xx
According to my husband our neighbour hasn’t been able to travel abroad with his dog for some while as he is immunosuppressed after treatment for cancer and the injections the dog would need will affect him.
I’ve got a feeling he might be ok to go now but I’m not sure - only heard all that via my husband. I thought it was bizarre when I first heard it. Not sure whether the decision was initiated by his doctors or the vet though.
Yes I imagine it does rock up every few years .. but if it is something new to our own situation then apologies if it is an old question. Happens all the time with various queries. I mentioned this recently about my SIL and her puppy and its kennel cough vaccine. I saw it on websites after posting here that you are not supposed to be in close contact with a dog who has had these vaccines for about six weeks as they shed the virus for that time and can cause you to get flu. I will try find the article. I saw a rheumatologiat two weeks ago for my knee injecting and he said you should stay away from a dog who has had the Bordetella vaccine for six weeks and he had consulted a vet on this too he said recently for another patient. The temp GP doesn't give me much confidence tbh with their reaction. I also disovered recently that a friend I was out with had had her flu vaccine the night before and didn't think to tell me but mentioned it three hours after we'd been sitting togther and she knows very well that I am on Rituximab and I get chest infections easily. However, you could be sitting next to someone in a random situation who has just had their flu jab and not know and they wouldn't aware about immuno-surpressed people. Was not good from my friend to not even consider what she did but she has done similar before ...brought kids out with infections with her.
Yes I meant the friend was remiss to come out less than day after getting it done and skt with me and not say anything. I didn't mean not to have a flu jab if you usually do. x
In UK the flu vaccine is recommended for people who are immunocompromised. Only if your friend had a flu sniff (given here only to children) would you be likely to catch something.
That said I attend a toddler group and how do I know what live vaccines (MMR, flu sniff) the children have had.
