Sudden flare through injury.

Hi All First I must apologise for not always thanking everyone for their replies I really do appreciate them and have learnt a lot on here. Read all the posts daily.

My question is I often get a bad flare after injuring myself. That's how I was first diagnosed . I was loading a Mule and she jerked backwards. That night I was in agony with my wrist and went to the Dr. next morning thinking I had injured myself. The rest is history Lol !! On Wednesday this week whilst in London I fell on a stationary escalator down the last step, over on my ankle. My daughter pulled me up and I said was ok although it hurt a bit. A few hours later It got more and more painful. Trip to A and E. As I couldn't walk. Strapped and crutchies managed to get on the train to home 2hrs. That night pain really bad all night big red ankle both sides ahh my RA. Does this happen to anyone else. That is my question. 24 -48 hrs later just about better.

Hi Thank you at least I'm not the only one. It's awful isn't it. I dozed most of the next day then had cold and shivers as well. Lovely.

Oh yes some days just pass me by

Yes I do too. Loading a Mule is quite an unusual thing to do! My last injury that set it off was a jolted elbow from pushing a 36 inch petrol mower on the cricket field, I was shattered for about 3 days after that and a painful elbow for around 4 weeks 😕

I love my equine friends but struggle now to groom them with my hands. I love to drive with a carriage which I can manage. It's nice to know I'm not the only one. The pain as it builds up is so intense.. I think its the worst pain I have ever had. I have broken bones in my feet and that isn't so bad. Hey ho keep going xx

Yes, a knock or bump or even the jiggling about from a car journey can set a flare going.

It's really strange isn't it. I work as a paid member in a charity shop and often it kills my fingers. I find that carrying to much weight hurts my ankles.xxx

I had a not bad few days last week. Paced myself, didn't do too much. Had a really hot disturbed nights sleep on Friday, flared yesterday. Seem ok today (so far). There is no (obvious) reason to any of this.

Thank you. That's really kind. Hope you also feel better soon xxx

I have exactly the same problem. 18 months ago I had a nasty fall and ruptured two tendons in my shoulder. However, with physiotherapy etc, it started to improve, then suddenly, I started to get crunching and grinding and horrible noises in my shoulder and arm and the pain got worse and worse. I had to see an orthopeadic surgeon in the end who said that apart from the ruptured tendons, I also had extensive OA and RA in the shoulder and arm all down to my elbow. I had never been bothered by that before I had the fall. I am now waiting to have a shoulder replacement and am taking morphine. The pain is getting worse all the time and I can no longer dress or undress myself, pick up anything, carry my handbag, cut up my food or really do anything with it.

I feel that this dreadful illness has taken so much from me. My hobbies are playing the piano and guitar, making cards and photography and I struggle to do any of them now. I can't even lift a book to read it comfortably anymore. We had a long journey home in the car from a short break away on Friday and although I was only sitting there, the pain has been horrendous to the point of me crying out with it since we got home.

Thank you Prettystuffed, it is good to know that others do understand just how bad it can be to live with this.

My first ever flare came after I dropped a shower door on my foot. I used to have the problem of little injuries causing flares but not since I’ve been in a biologic.

Hi dbestdeb I am trying a biologic soon. What are you on? Did it cause any problems for you? It's a real pain this illness. xx

Right now I’m using Simponi and it’s working okay as far as I can tell. My dr will assess my bloodwork soon and decide if I stay on this one or not. I began with Enbrel, then was changed to Humira. The Enbrel wasn’t bad but I had a bad experience with the Humira. Everyone is different so you just never know. Good luck!

I identify! My r.a started after I fell. I fractured a bone in my arm, which went undiagnosed until I couldn’t move the fingers in my hand. I went to a hand specialist who figured out I had a fracture ... and he also ordered tests for r.a.

As I had relatives visiting, I didn’t follow through for a month or so, but when I could no longer lift my arms, I figured I’d better get on the case.

Since that time, I changed my diet (try to keep it plant based and try to cut out sugar as much as I can — though I had two slices of birthday cake today ...👻) and I started biologics. (Orencia) Most days I’m fine ... very, very physically active.

That’s my story, and I’m stickin’ to it! Hope you’re better soon.

Hi Wilhelmena It's lovely to hear some similar stories Makes me feel a bit better. I really must try to change my diet I eat a fairly good diet but I love sugar in my tea and coffee. I have tried to give it up with sweetners or even without.... Its not the same !!!!

We are advised not to put too much stress on our joints & I find if I load my shopping too much it will cause my wrist to play up.. so I assume if you fall it will also put stress on your joints only worse as you must have bruising & possibly strained ligaments too.... I guess there is a connection as our joints are delicate, take care xx

Hi Juliachoo I think you are right about that. I am considering giving up work because its quite physical . I then suffer quite a bit with my thumb joints. Oh the joys !!
