I have recently had a full hip right hip replacement and coming on fine. The hip is great and far less painful, but still suffering from really bad back pain on walking.

I am due to see the surgeon in a fortnight and will mention it to him. The part that has really shocked me is when I checked his letter to my GP, apart from all the other problems I have it states COPD. This is news to me, could he possibly have made a mistake or if he hasn’t how does he know I have It ?? First time it has been mentioned by anybody. Just another thing to worry about

Well do you feel,short of breath? Did the anaesthetist mention anything after your surgery?

Could well be his secretary made a mistake,..telephone & ask....don't sit worrying about it...your GP will be able to sort things.

I think you might have noticed if you had COPD!

TBH AgedCrone that’s what I thought. I am not or ever have been short of breath. Before the op they asked me if I smoked and I said No, packed in 3 years ago and they seemed pleased with that. Got a shock when I saw it listed in my complaints which is long enough without this lol. I couldn’t understand how he could put this without any tests or anything. I am just going to put it down to a mistake and ask him when I go to see him at he beginning of March.

Just don't fret over it......one secretary wrote in my notes that I'd had a hysterectomy ...which I think I may have noticed as I walked out of the hospital after a few hours....it should have read Hysteroscopy!

Just look after your hip,& get ready for all those summer walks...without puffing & panting!!

Mistakes can and do happen. It would be well worth contacting the surgeon's secretary, as advised by AC. Having said that, I discovered that I'd had pneumonia from an insurance policy! Obviously checked it out with medical records and it was right. Nobody thought to tell me at the time, though.

Hi, it sounds like you should concentrate on one thing at a time and stop beating yourself up over an other until you are fitter to do so. COPD is a very wide catagory and without knowing what your GP has picked up it is difficult to advise. Suggest you get well with the hip then ask the question, when you will be stronger to cope with it.

Hello Pip,

I hope you are recovering well from your THR and that you don't have COPD. I am waiting for the same op - usually about a year or more over here - and I was hoping you could give me some much needed advice as I don't know anyone who has had it. I am really scared of having a THR, with having RA and osteoporosis as well, and getting through recovery and possible complications. My hip is quite badly damaged already and I have very limited movement so I cannot exercise in preparation for the surgery. Any info or advice would be really helpful. Thanks. Pat 64.

Hi Pat. I too suffer with RA, Osteoporosis and Osteoarthritis. I am sorry your hip is badly damaged and needs replacing. Believe me I was terrified of having it done but the good people on here put my mind at rest. Like you I was in bad pain with restrictive movement and I couldn’t do the exercises either.

When I went in theatre I explained to the surgeon how nervous I was and he put his arms round me and reassured me everything would be OK. It certainly was and there is absolutely nothing to be worried about. Regarding the anaesthetic I had the epidural in my back and an injection to make me relax. Would highly recommend this to a full anaesthetic, recovery time after is a lot quicker. I went in Thursday afternoon, was up and took first steps on the Friday and was back home Saturday afternoon.

Please put your mind at rest Pat64, you will find it will be the best thing you have done. If there’s anything else you need to ask, please do not hesitate. Wishing you all the luck xxx
