Hi Deejojo

I had a tkr on left knee just under 2 years ago. Best decision I ever made. My right knee is looking as though it will need a tkr soon but I would be happy to go through it all again to get the relief.

Best of luck x

Hi deejojo

2.5 years ago, I had bilateral TKRs ( both knees replaced together, at the same time). It was tough going but I’ve had no significant bother with them since.

What I would say is following the op,the most important thing is physio. It can hurt like hell but it is crucial you are diligent and commit to it, to assure a successful outcome.

Wishing you the very best going forward.

Bone on bone in the knee joint is no fun. TKR on right in 2009, and left in 2011. PT by professionals on R, and by self on L. Recovery of L was far less painful, more successful than R, because I did the excercises first thing after waking up before swelling set in, instead of following the therapist's schedule. I devised several methods to help me achieve my goals for flexion and extension beyond that of the PTs. Bladder wrap with ice water pump worked very well to reduce swelling.

I can’t kneel either! I had bilateral TKRs and three months before, bilateral THRs- no pain but if I fall, I cannot get up!

Wobbling on your bottom to ease up on a chair is as what they taught me. Ive had two hips two knees and a shoulder so far!

Touch wood- shoulders fine. With the hips and knees, I had additional surgery on both feet, toes pinned, bones shaved and tendons cut and reattached- it can be such a cruel and destructive disease!

The bum idea, is a good one and one I will def try at a later date. Unfortunately, I fell two months ago and broke both wrists and I’m just out of plaster but when they heal- I’ll definitely give it a go!

Take care

Good morning. I have RA and OA and its 3 years since I had my TKR and what a difference it has made to my life. I was virtually unable to walk before surgery but now I go walking, Modern Jiving and many other activities which I was unable to do before.

Good luck with your procedure. The only adviceI would give to you is try to strengthen your thigh muscles before the surgery as it will help with your recovery.

Take care

Hi, Ihad one last year, I’ve had no problems at all with the knee replacement only the surrounding tissue, which will still swell when the RA is flailing, but the knee itself is fine.

Hi deejojo from jojo! 😊

Had right done 2017.. Fab!

Currently 7 weeks into left. I had much more pain and swelling first time, but they pushed me more, and kicked me out of hosp after 2 days, this one was done in my normal hosp not the private one, and was 100%better experience.

The most important things are..

Do exercises, getting your bend and straighten is crucial.. But to do this.. Take the painkillers to enable you to do above! You will need them.

Also.. Don't try to do too much apart from your exercises. If you do too much the swelling could continue for longer (in my experience and seeing others)

Keep your chin up.

Message us on here.. I have done so, this recovery, and it has helped immensely. I don't feel alone. ❤️

Take care

Jojo x

I've had both done - April 2016 and August 2017 - and frankly it was life-changing. Great advice given here about keeping painkillers topped up and following physio instructions. I noticed big improvements in progress roughly six days, six weeks and six months after the ops.

I was lucky enough to have both operations done by the same surgeon, via NHS, at a hospital nearby that just does joint replacements and nothing else, so the after-care is really top-notch. They also use spinal blocks as opposed to general anaesthetic which can improve recovery time (don't worry, you're still zonked out so know nothing about it!).I think you can choose to go there from anywhere in the UK - here's the link if you're interested:

I’ve had two. They’re fine, what would you like to know?

Hi Cathie I was just wanting a bit of info really what’s the op like how do I feel after do u have that motion device on sorry for all the questions xx

The op went well, I was given a light anaesthetic but could have had as much as I wanted. After a night recovering I got back to normal fairly quickly, they want you to keep movement as much as possible to avoid a blood clot. I brought lots of light reading on an iPad, got home on day 4 I think. I had to show I could shower and dress myself and go to the loo. A physio came and I had to climb a few stairs. At home I did the excercises and saw the physio once a week as I’d been doing.

I think the best thing was when people let me go at my own speed in making progress.

So there’s not a lot to say really but I do agree with everyone who’s said doing exercises regularly was important but not to overdo them and to rest properly.

I hope you feel a bit reassured

Xx

Don’t hesitate to ask!

I should’ve said they were both done at edinburgh royal infirmary. Everyone involved was superb and very kind.

He did Paddy’s hip. I had an amazing surgeon whose name I’ve forgotten but who was very senior. -Howie. Had a can of irn bru on his desk. He bounced in wearing casual clothes on Saturday to ask me in a jolly way how I was feeling. I couldn’t wish for better.

Hi

I had my R knee replaced 9 yrs ago, at times I've wished never had it done as I have a metal shunt to strengthen my bone as I had a lot of damage, dread when it needs to be done again, still have terrible pain where the shunt is joined. However left knee totally different good results.

My mum on other hand has had good results with both her knees & gets around great without a stick. It all depends on the condition of your supporting bone and how often you do your physio.

Good luck & the hard work will start the day after surgery.

Hi Deejojo, waiting to be released from hospital after tkr on Monday. I'm not really looking forward to what's coming up over the next two weeks, but I know I will cope and do my exercises religiously. Thanks to all the other people who have replied. Saves me posting. All the best.
