I had a hiatus hernia diagnosed in 2000. I take a PPI (Esomeprazole) daily and that keeps it under control for me. If I miss it for a couple of days, I start to get nausea and can feel when the hernia slides up into my chest making it difficult to swallow even water.

I have had one for years now,you will have to watch what you eat as certain foods will affect it which i would think you hae already found out. I have been controlled with Lanzaporole(excuse spelling).xxxxx

I was diagnosed with a sliding hiatus hernia last year at an endoscopy (but think I’ve actually had it for years), and take 40mg Omeprazole daily. If I don’t take the O, I get terrible acid reflux. I was told to eat little and often rather than fewer, bigger meals, and I find that this works for me. It was also suggested that I raise the head of my bed, but I have to confess I never got round to that!

I've had acid reflux for a couple of years. Doc said he thinks its a hiatus hernia but I haven't had an endoscopy to certify. Anyway, should I nod off in my reclining chair, as often happens, :-) with it slightly tilted back then I find I have less trouble with acid than if it's tilted further back. Not saying it stops the reflux entirely but it does help. You could prop yourself up in bed with extra pillows. No harm in giving it a go.

I have HH and there are actually quite a few natural ways to help. This is really a good video if you want to learn about HHs and the best way to treat them.

I have a hiatus hernia too, the only time I had real problems with it was when I was also suffering from gall stones. I found at the time that anything fatty or food which contained lots of milk or cream made the acid reflux 10 times worse. Took Ompeprazole for a while but I guess I’m really lucky because it doesn’t cause too many issues now gall bladder has gone. They don’t operate on hiatus hernias because it’s a big op. My dad suffers terribly with his but I’m hoping that yours settles down soon and you turn out to be a lucky one like me if that’s possible.

I am on omeprazole as well. Beeps my reflux under control. Other name for it here in Canada is Tecta.

It can be taken with or without food and starts to work very quickly. Lasts around 20 hours for me. I take it daily for a couple weeks then am good for a month or so.

At my endoscopy they found a small hernia. GP told me that they don't do anything about it apart from prescribing Omeprazol or similar. Mine doesn't cause me any issues. X

Hello Pulfs,

Do look at the link I posted above. It was really an eye opener for me! I am so glad I saw this before starting any ant acids!

I’ve never had an endoscopy but have been taking rabeprazole for years. My GP just said “I’m sure you’ve got a hiatus hernia, most very overweight people do have one”. Helpful!

You might find this useful if you haven't seen it already: nhs.uk/conditions/hiatus-he...

I find my symptoms are worse if I put on weight, or eat big meals, sit squashed up, or get stressed. I found Gaviscon, which can be bought over the counter, more effective for me, than taking PPIs like lansoprazole. Then I can just take it when I need it instead of regular medication.
