Hi Guys hope you are as well as can be.Just a query ,I’ve got to have my Hernia fixed and after seeing the report on the Victoria Derbyshire program this op can leave you very disabled apparently upto 30% of patients are left in a bad way.

Has anyone had this op not using mesh if so please let me know where as I’m afried I will

have to go private as most surgeons only use the mesh system.

I’m seeing my GP on Monday so hopefully your suggestions may be of help.

Regards Mike

I’ve had two ops using mesh each time. First one was ok for a while, then it broke away at the side hence the second op. I had it done in 2007, has held up until now but as I’ve lost quite a bit of weight I have noticed I have a lump on my abdomen again. Doctor said it is scar tissue and visceral fat that has accumulated around the mesh. My friend has had the op too and like me she has a lumpy tummy but she has always been thin. It’s apparently the bodies way of excepting a foreign body in it. We were both told it is the best way for an umbilical hernia repair, the one that tore on me was Private, the second and my friends was NHS, my surgeon at NHS used a bigger piece of gauze saying it tends to hold better. Good Luck hope all goes well for you....Chris

A guy I worked with had a work related hernia fixed via the mesh method (in OZ). It seemed to work very well for him, but he chose to be careful about what he lifted manually. His job was pretty physical (that’s how he got the hernia), but, by using appropriate manual handling techniques AND equipment, he’s still as good as ever 10 years down the track. Not sure if you’re a guy or a gal, but maybe do some research and ask questions about how they’re going to do the procedure? You don’t want to be going private if it’s not really necessary, cheers Deb :)

A friends husband had it done a year ago and he still has an open wound because of in infection. He has had to have 2 further ops to try and remove infection, is only now beginning to heal . Sorry for the awful story , I don’t know how common this is but he has had s nightmare.

OH had the op with mesh about 4 years ago. Never had a problem, and has been completely fine since.

My husband has has the op with the mesh and he is fine. He was back in work after six weeks. He is a truck driver and uses a crane so plenty of climbing up and down. He watches what he lifts now though. No more heavy weights.

My husband had hernia repairs in 2012 and in July this year, both times privately and using mesh. So far, he's absolutely fine.

Hi i am wondering if the problems i am having are caused by mesh. They did not even say they had put mesh in but i assume. I had a femoral hernia caused by constipation a few months ago, but really it is not right and worried as my bowel problems continue, and i can feel the hernia coming back. Also a pricking sensation when i walk, could this be the mesh?
