Do you have tips for beating brain fog?

CreakyJointsWriter profile image

I'm writing an article for creakyjoints.org about how people with rheumatoid arthritis can overcome the concentration problems that often accompany RA, and I'd love to hear real-life anecdotes. Have you found any strategies that help your memory and concentration?

For me, exercise is the answer, although I appreciate that this may not work for some RA folk. I like to weight train and push myself, an added benefit is a great sense of calm, being in charge and better clarity of mind, cheers Deb :)

I suffered from extreme brain fog before commencing methotrexate and tried many things to relieve it, nothing worked for me. I am still under the care of the neurologist, who recommended that my DMARD be changed to MTX ( seemingly the best for extreme brain fog) which was in the process of happening anyway.

Exercise made the brain fog much worse, a definate no no for me.

Altering my diet had no effect.

Trying to socialise made the brain fog much worse, I could notake even keep a conversation going.

Keeping well hydrated and not letting myself get hungry had a small impact (carbs were, and still are best for a small improvement).

A good nights sleep did help a bit too, if I could manage to get that.

Methotrexate has been my saviour ! It has resolved the problem almost completely.

I live with calendars 📆 and journals everywhere. Particularly as it pertains to medications. I tick the calendar in am and pm to ensure I take meds. I also keep a record of all other meds taken and side effects. I also never make appointments without referring to my bible (day planner).

I also do exercises to maintain motor dexterity and games to work the grey matter lol
