Hi

Haven't been on in awhile.. I have been on methotrexate injection's from February gradually going from 10mg to 15mg, I have a few side effects, but feel much better on energy and pain levels. I have a UTI just now took my injection on Saturday, doctor has given me trimethoprin, I thought I read somewhere that you can't take this while on methotrexate, am I wrong? Has anyone else taken this before and been OK?

You're correct, the two should not be taken together. If it was me I'd be marching down to my GP & inform him/her. I think I'm right in saying that an alert should have come up on the screen because it's a potentially serious problem. Please don't take it.

This only goes to show how important it is for the patient to be on top of things and understand how the meds work in there bodies. Even doctors make mistakes.

I rec. hold fire and speak to a pharmacist.

Thats not good enough, some gps are very poorly educated about the drugs used for autoimmune conditions.

Thanks for your replies, I called NHS24, they advised not to take this and will get a Dr to speak to me about alternative antibiotics

I'm sure you'll be given advice on the appropriate alternative but just to be sure you shouldn't have co-trimoxazole either, it contains trimethoprim.

As a matter of interest was it your normal (named) GP who prescribed the trimethoprim?

I too am on methotrexate and have had lots of UTI's and was given a little booklet when starting it. I have just re read it and it states do not take co-trimoxazole (Septrin) or trimethoprim as these can react with methotrexate. Well done for querying it. My husband is a retired pharmacist and says he had to sometimes contact the doctor to point out incompatibles.

How did you get on GFmum? Did you have any joy with being prescribed a different antibiotic?

I too am on mtx injections and always remind whatever specialist I see that I am on it. I also check with the pharmacist before filling any prescriptions. It is the pharmacist that really knows of drug interactions. I learnt this the hard way.
