Excruciating groin pain

Is there any one on here that has experienced terrible pains in their groin from their RA? I take prednisome, methotrexate and now my doctor as added 375 mg of naproxine which is not helping at all. The pain is excruciating most of the time. Help, need advice.

Im so sorry you are in that much pain. No have not had that type of pain and only thing I can say is my rheumy said there was no point in taking naproxin when on steroids as steroids trump naproxin. We know that all rheumys have different ideas, and I only say this as naproxin not helping you.

Thanks so much Ruth...yeah the naproxin is not doing anything. I'm trying extra strength tylenol which seems to help it ease up just enough to make me feel not so "homicidal" lol at times. Guess I'll have to give my rheumy a call.

Also there are other reasons to have that kind of pain so maybe gp will help you. Take care.

Are you & your docs sure it is from the RA? Maybe see your GP and ask for it to investigated independently from the RA?

I have but not for long about a day I thought it was water infection but it wasent I to am on the same meds as you it was agony try hot water bottle how long you been in pain hope it clears up soon take care x

I’ve just had a total hip replacement. The majority of my pain pre op was in my groin. Consultant said it was osteoarthritis. The relief from the pain was almost instant. Just hoping they don’t make me wait too long before they do the other one!

Might be worth asking for an orthopaedic referral.

Thanks thelmar...may have to look into an orthopaedic. Sure hope that don't say anything like what you had to do but I sure am glad you found some relief.

Yes this is typical of RA and for me often means i have done too much. I got groin pains when I was in the acute stage and very very seldom get groin pains now ... Rosie

But it always pays to mention absolutely everything to your specialist and your GP.

Often hip inflammation causes pain in the groin area. Horrible! Hope it improves soon!

Just started with severe groin pain, I’ve taken a prednisalone & an ibuprofen I’m hoping it will go away 🧐

I tried ibuprofen but found that Tylenol helps better.

I get this occasionally and it starts suddenly over a few hours - lasts a few days. Its been put down to RA by the consultant as I’ve had an MRI which didnt show anything else. I go from normal walking to completely immobile within hours. Fortunately it doesn’t happen in that joint very often ! (Always at the wrong time though!!)

When I was 16 years old I got very bad groin pains and was checked for a urine infection and didn't have one. It got so bad that I was referred to a specialist and eventually ended up in hospital for a time and had an exploratory operation. It was in the days before MRIs. I was told there was nothing wrong with me and to just forget about it. After a long time it seemed to get better apart from a few odd days of it. Then when I was 28, I got glandular fever and it seemed to set off all the groin pains again for quite a long time and I was again told there was nothing wrong.

I now wonder if I had the beginnings of RA as long ago as that. I am 67 now and find it hard to remember a time when I wasn't in pain and think that it began when I was about 10, but that nothing was done about it.

Hi - I write and read here for my daughter who has RA. My daughter has had these groin pains many times before she was diagnosed with RA! She could barely walk and she was on her feet a lot for her job, so she was missing weeks of work! Finally a doctor referred her to an RA specialist when she was having a terrible flare, and sure enough she tested positive for Ankylosing Spondylitis with Schlerosis in her back. He started her on Humira right away and she’s been on it for about 6 months now. What a difference!

Just for the record, she used to get terrible rib pain also. I’ve not seen too many people with RA complain about that either. But apparently it was RA related - perhaps with the schlerosis in her back. I don’t want to get off on a tangent, but just because many people don’t have groin pain, doesn’t mean that it’s not a problem with some forms of RA. Everyone is different. My daughter also had ulcerative colitis along the way before diagnosed with RA and no one ever put it together until one sharp family physician realized everything was adding up to RA. We were surprised, but happy to have a diagnosis finally!

Prednisone did little to help my daughter. But Humira helped right away. Have you tried a biologic yet?

Wow, thanks so much for your reply. I think this just has to do with Mr RA. I was on humera a couple years ago and when I was getting along so well with it I asked my rhea my if I could try getting off of the humera which we did. Maybe I should go back on it. Will talk to my doctor about it. Thank you so much. So sorry your daughter suffered so long but finally got some help.

I am hearing more and more about the immunotherapy drug called Rituxan. I had infusions with Rituxan for lymphoma. I see it is being used now for a variety of conditions including RA. Maybe ask your doctor about Rituxan too?

I had an allergic reaction the first time I had Rituxan, but they immediately got me on a steroid drip and benedryl and I was then able to take the infusion. But, I’ve not heard of any bad reactions to Rituxan after treating with it. It put me into remission. Perhaps someone here will know more about its use for RA.

Yes, pain and discomfort in Rt. groin for several months, so saw GP whom examined me ( lying down on couch and asking me to cough few times whilst he placed his fingers on my Rt. groin / top of leg.

Yes, expecting him to say all part of RA and Osteoarthritis , so bit taken aback when diagnosed an inguinal hernia. ( am 61with RA of 9 yrs ).
