Has anybody else had a fractured ankle ? How long does it take to heal ?
I’ve been told it may take longer because of my RA ?
I’ve been in a walking boot for the past 6 weeks .hospital appointment Wednesday for x Ray .hopefully it’s healed .just wondering how long it will take to get full mobility again
I broke my left ankle three years ago and i was non weight bearing for six weeks and i was in plaster. I have to say it depends on what sort of break you have,i had to have surgery on mine as i had broke it in two places. I was in hospital for 8 days so mine was fairly serious. I was out of plaster after the six weeks and i have to say my ankle hasn't been the same since. They do say things take longer to heal with RA. I hope you soon recover.xxxx
I fractured left ankle and had a break in right ankle..careless! Both healed but there is a weakness now for example if walking down steps either ankle can suddenly give way..good luck with hospital appointment
I fractured my heel and spent about 13 weeks in a moonboot over summer in Australia. I was so glad to get that thing off and yes it took longer to heal. Good luck
I had my ankle joint replaced last May. Yes they allow longer, by a couple of weeks or so. I had mine in plaster for 3 weeks, no weight bearing AT ALL. Zimmer frame only. Then a big black boot for 5 weeks, but at least I could get about. When it came off, I used the frame for a day or two just get confidence. Then it gradually built up strength and flexibility. Walking was good after a week or so but flexibility took 3-6 months to fully develop. Thank goodnes for the NHS I'd still be in a lot of pain without the op, but now no pain.
Thanks ladies . I’ve broken this ankle twice before when I was a kid .with my job I’m on my feet all day .not sure how sympathetic they will be ....I’ve had quite a lot of time off already with RA related things (shingles waiting for meds to kick in etc )
I dropped my contract to accommodate the constant tiredness already . Ho hum life’s a bitch sometimes but as the saying goes onwards and upwards 
I broke my left ankle about 15 years ago and was in plaster for four weeks and when the plaster came off it felt very weak but with exercises it wasn't very long before it was back to normal. This was before I had RA.
Then six years ago, I fell and broke both my ankles. I was in a back slab for a week then a big black boot on my right foot for six weeks, but my left ankle was just bandaged as it wasn't so bad as the right one. It was noticeable that it took longer for me to heal up that time. Of course it could have been that I was older and was on methatexate as well as having RA.
On nooo poor you . Both legs ? Must have been a nightmare for you .
This is what I thought .....about healing process I’m in a boot ( have been for 6 weeks ) first week it was a backslap
So total 7 weeeks .i take boot off to sleep and when I’m watching TV
My ankle feels so stiff and can barely move it apart from wiggle my toes .
Guess I just have to be patient

I broke a wee bone in my foot two years ago and had a moonboot on for 6weeks, then another two weeks because it wasn’t heeling, i offered to go in to work as I could get a lift from a colleague but works insurance wouldn’t have me on the premises on health and safety grounds, even just to do office tasks, so I got 8weeks at home feeling the best I ever had because I was resting... not driving was a pest but I could really do with another 8week “break” (pun intended)
Prove my dominant wrist 3 years ago and that was little fun as again no driving and I struggled to do most simple things like wash my hair.
I wonder if we fracture more easily with RA?
I work on an aircraft so work is a no go at the moment.Maybe they will let me work on the ground for a short while , however having said that year before last I was off after getting shingles and trying to get meds right .They refused ground duties as they wanted me back on the contract I was employed for ( another way of managing one out the job )!
When I broke it I wasn’t even doing anything excertive .had pins and neeedles numb leg stood up and crashesd to floor
I’m now being sent for a bone density scan as it broke so easily
Will have to wait now for appointment.
What’s so annoying is that fie the first 15 years of my job I never took a days sick and that was full time !
Hate getting old hate this damn RA !

No, not done an ankle break, just an avulsion fracture of cuboid bone in one foot.
That was exactly two years ago due to RA affecting both feet and ankles and tripping me.
Seven weeks in big black boot but no surgery or stay in hospital.

Hi fifi2 The first thing that happened before diagnosis was a fractured ankle. It took 18 months to heal. I had to wear a boot up to my knees. It didn't help as my right leg is no longer straight and goes sideways. Eveyone is different so i hope yours will heal quicker.

Everybody heals at a different pace but one thing I would really emphasise is to a accept all the Physiotherapy you are offered.
I broke an ankle 30 years ago & having a job where I had to walk,walk,walk I had to be off work for 6 months & it was definitely due to the physio I had that my ankle strengthened & is perfectly OK now.

I broke mine two years ago and it had left a weakness. Couple with your previous break it might take a lot longer and might leave the ankle with a slight weakness.
Judging by other’s response it’s s long job but exercise and rest in tgevright amounts will help.

I broke my left ankle last October was in a boot cast for 3 months went for about 4-5 months without boot cast and am now having to wear a ankle brace as I’ve had a lot of trouble with swelling. My consultant told me that on average a break takes 6-8 months to heal fully but a minimum of 1 year if you’ve got RA
