Tender ribs anyone!

Hi I’m having my first rheumatologist appointment this week and wondered should I tell him about my tender ribs. My rib cage around my back is very tender to touch and also area below, on my back, both sides. Has anyone else experienced this please? I’m reluctant to bring it up in case he thinks I’m mad lol!

Tell him/her as it's a possible diagnostic symptom. Inflammation of the bits between your ribs is fairly common, and called costochondritis.

Hi love .yes as the others say .

It will be costochondritis. I.ve had it a few times .can be very sore .apparently if you have R/A you are prone to it .

Very gentle hugs love x

My ribs pop out of the brackets in my back it’s done this since I was about 19 :( it’s horrendous. It has happened loads in this last flare up so I should think I had inflammation in the joints but there is nothing they can do it goes back in on it’s own x do you think it maybe that?

You have costochondritis it is a side kick of Fibro usually; I have had it constantly for over 35 years , I am always in pain but sometimes it is unbearable. You must mention it as they will know about this condition; I was told it would go away within a year.......35 years later ??? wishing you well.

List anything & everything Em. Something you may not think consequential could be of importance both at your diagnostic appointment & reviews. You don't need to go into detail, bullet point notes work just as well, your Rheumy will ask you to expand on it probably examine the area if needed. This includes your family history. I know your mum has it, that will be of interest to your Rheumy, as will when you started with symptoms so jot things like this down. Any other conditions or ops you've had too, if you're currently taking any prescription meds list them & doses, things like that. This may be of further help nras.org.uk/the-patient-jou...

As others have said it does sound costochondritis-like, it can be pretty common unfortunately if you're prone to it & can be very painful. A localised steroid injection often helps, not being on treatment yet won't be helping if you have extensive inflammation but once you have your diagnosis & start on them everything should start to settle given a good few weeks.

I hope all goes accordingly tomorrow.

Hi .It's costochondritis ,,I've had it for about6 months ,I know how painful it can be .I find if I've been on my feet for a while it starts up and it's like it's your heart sometimes ,can be frightening as it effects your breast bone ,painkillers and hot water bottle is all you can do .It can take a long time to go away .If it's u bearable they can inject it but I don't think ill go down that road.Hope you feel better soon

Thanks. The tenderness is only in my back, the ribs and lower back, not around the front of my rib cage. Hope you feel better soon too
