Mouth Ulcers

I’m posting for my husband who has RA - he’s not very good with technology, so here I am on his behalf! I’m just wondering if anyone else gets mouth ulcers? He gets them often and nothing seems to help them clear up and they’re terribly painful. I wonder what causes them - could it be his meds? The doctors only treat his symptoms but nothing helps. He’s on:

Prednisolon 3mg

Tilidin 100mg

Ramipril 5mg

Pantoprazol 20mg

Gabepentin 800mg

We live in Germany 🇩🇪 I’m English, he’s German and despite the fact I’ve lived here for 21 years, i still don’t understand everything. It’s especially hard with medical vocabulary, so that’s why I use HealthUnlocked. 😊

He’s also got terrible problems with his second knee replacement, but that’s another post another time.

It could be his meds darling, but then it could be because of Sjorgens. Get him to his rheumy and see if they can get some answers for you.Re; your hubby'y knee replacement go and see the surgeon who did it and find out why he is having so much trouble with it.xxxx

Horrible things mouth ulcers, so I sympathise. I had a big bout of them a few years back as a result of drugs, and they drove me nuts. The best short term relief was sucking antiseptic throat lozenges.

None of the drugs he's on do seem to list this as a common side effect, but I don't know much about Naloxone (Tilidin). But that doesn't mean they aren't the root cause. Either directly or because they have caused a vitamin inbalance. With the drug that I was on, Methotrexate, it was hugely helped by increasing my folic acid. Bit eventually I had to swap to an alternative route.

So they only thing I can suggest is to ask your doctor about testing for common vitamin deficiencies - folic acid, B12, Vit D and magnésium. (Or just try some over the counter supplements). And make sure that when he takes his drugs he also drinks lots of water.

Thanks for your reply. I will pass on the info to him, especially about drinking lots of water when taking his pills as I don’t think he does. 😊

and I will also suggest he gets tested for vitamin deficiencies 😊

There was an article in the most recent NRAS magazine about a woman who got terrible mouth ulcers as a side effect of her meds and eventually managed to cure them by gargling with salt water. Have you seen it? If not, and if you think it might be helpful, let me know and I'll find the article and give you some more detail. Mouth ulcers are horrible, I hope he can find something tht helps soon xx

We would love some more info on the salt water gargling please 😊

The lady in the article had a terrible time with mouth ulcers as a side effect of methotrexate. On the advice of her pharmacist she gargled with saline (salt water) 4 or 5 times a day. In fact she found that just holding the warm water in her mouth for 1 minute worked best for her. She saw an improvement after 48hrs and the mouth ulcers were gone after 2 weeks.

I see you've got lots of good suggestions in this thread. I hope your husband can find something that works for him.

Good morning to you both. I suffered for many years with mouth ulcers and I had tried everything to get rid of the little sore blisters. My gp told me to change my toothpaste and I did as most of them had this ingredient in sorry I cannot remember the name. However I think what got rid of mine was cranberry juice 🥤 I started off by drinking nearly a carton a day for a week then a glass every morning and now they are all gone. I must say I suffered really badly with them. It also cleared up my cystitis as I use to also get that really badly. It’s definitely worth a try for him because cranberry juice 🥤 has helped so many people that suffer with mouth ulcers. I didn’t like the taste in the beginning but then I got on really well and enjoyed it. Best of luck I really feel for him as I know how sore they can be. Merry Christmas to you both. 🤗🤗🎅🤶🦌🎄☃️xxx

Thanks so much for your reply. I will definitely get him to try the cranberry juice 🥤 and will do a bit of research into the toothpaste ingredient to be avoided - I might even give our dentist a call as he might be able to help.

Merry Christmas to you too. 🤶☃️

I think that speaking to his dentist might be a very good idea. If he is a good dentist. I am sure if he persists with the cranberry it will do him a lot of good in more ways than one. Good luck and I truly hope that it works for him. Take care and god bless you both. Love and hugs 🤗🤗🤗🎅🤶🦌🎄☃️xxx

Also another thing I was told not to use mouth wash as it takes all the good products away from protecting the gums. I haven’t used mouthwash in a long time and I don’t need to see the dentist as much anymore. Good luck to both of you and I truly hope that he get rid off them. Take good care love and hugs 🤗🤗xxx

The dentist suggested to me that I use Orobase which is a paste used to protect mucous membranes and for people who need to protect the skin around colostomies. And to keep my teeth and gums as clean as possible with no food remnants.

Of course check with the doctor first but mine added 1 mg of folic acid twice per day to my meds and my mouth problem was solved.

Methotrexate gave me mouth ulcers.

To cut a long story short, bathing my mouth in saline (warm salty water) 5 times a day solved the problem.

I had huge bulbous mouth ulcers, they were so painful and at the time they were worse than having RA. I could not eat, talk, sleep soundly.

A pharmacist told me that Methotrexate was suppressing my immune system (as it should) and that one of the most unclean places on/in the body is our mouths hence the mouth ulcers.

After around 4 months of 'religious bathing' they disappeared!

Doctors still are not exactly sure what it was as e off humira and leflunomide and started me on acyclovir but I still have small whites patches and a lesion....

culture came back negative for herpes ..so a lot of unknown.... praying for your husband
