RA severely effected by lack of sleep?

Yvettebloo profile image
26 Replies

This little munchkin hasn't had a decent nights sleep in three nights, which obviously means I haven't! When he finally goes to bed my 4 year old gets up at 5am. I've had no more than three hours sleep each night.

But when I get up I'm literally crippled in pain, worse than its ever ever been. Is ra effected by sleep?

Lucky, lucky fellow, Philip, to have a good hearted-career (ex or not, 🤡 or not). We all need a good heart 💓 to keep an eye 👁 on us — or at least keep us out of mischief! 😳 🤣 🙃

My little ginge is the most affectionate smiley little boy, still has time to develop his fiery temperament yet! Haha but for now he's just turned one so will enjoy his innocence xx

It’s definately not good having no sleep for the little one, there used to be some good simple medicines and one person knew dipped his dummy in whiskey, it really worked lol. Have you asked your GP for help, I hope you both get some well deserved slumber.

He has a tummy bug so will pass but I wasn't sure if there was any sleep versus RA information. I've taken naproxen and cocodamols all day to try keep on top of it

Hi --- I am always in more pain and have more swollen joints when I've had a couple of nights with not much sleep. Hope things soon settle down 😊

Lack of sleep is deffo not good when you have RA.

Definitely! I know that's not helpful, particularly having youngsters, but is there any way you could catch up a bit during the day? It's never the same as a restful night's sleep & it's probably a big ask but if you could have a nap it may go some way towards helping. It's known RD stiffness is worst in the mornings though, the synovium thickens overnight, it becomes thinner by the movement of the joints so the longer we're moving the less stiff we are, in theory. Inflammation is also at work overnight, I was told from the start to have my NSAID with my evening meal then it works whilst I'm sleeping & the inflammation in the mornings should be less.

Can I just say what a cutie you have there, that button nose, that red hair & cheeky smile... love him.

Yeah I do often have a nap but half hour, an hour is never ever long enough haha I feel like I could have a full nights sleep midday! Isn't it strange how lack of sleep effects ra but yet laying for too long also effects it. We can't win!

Aw thank you, he's half of my world ❤️ Always smiling. Sent to help me get through this disease xx

Agree that when not enough sleep, the pain will be worse. I am very sorry to know that you still have to take care of the little one while you are suffering too. I was not having anyone for me to look after during my peak of suffering and yet I found it so painful and tough each day. I could not imaging how much you have to bear the pain of your body. I hope you can find someone to help you around so that you can have a break.

Sending you my big hug and love!!

It’s definitely affected by lack of sleep. Also it’s a stressful time for you which makes a difference. Unfortunately you’re probably worrying about having so little sleep as well and this also impacts on inflammation etc. I hope he settles soon and you start getting a bit more sleep you poor thing. x

Do you give him a warm milky drink at night to help him sleep. You are going to suffer darling with lack of sleep and i can sympathise with you. That smile will melt anyone and i want to cuddle the little darling.Your so lucky with him even if you are losing sleep. Just remember darling they grow up so quickly.xxxxx

Yes, sleep is very important and lack of it is a bad thing for RA. Any chance of some one else taking the night shift so you can put ear plugs in and get a full 8 hours?

Beautiful boy. As said, they grow up so quickly not that you can imagine that when you are in the midst of those years. Trust me mine are now 29 and 32.

Yes as said by others sleep certainly affects us...well lack of anyway. I find I sleep better on the same 3/4 nights than the other 3/4 nights. I wonder if its to do with my weekly methx, dont know. I take pain relief as you do, but it can make me more sleepy during the day, dont know if you are the same.

Really hope they get their sleeps in sinc so you get more too.

Take care and what a fab Christmas you will have.

He's a real cutie with the most gorgeous smile. My youngest has always been a dreadful sleeper. Only thing that really worked was either sleeping in bed with me or at least in the same room!

You have my deepest sympathy. Losing sleep has so many bad effects on you, including your RA. Not only will it aggravate the RA but it will lessen your ability to deal with it. Your little munchkin will settle soon, i'm sure, and your older one will learn to get up later. Promise. My mum used to say that you spent the first years of your child's life getting them into bed and the rest of it trying to get them out. This stage seems endless at the time but it does improve. Greatbig gentle hugs.

Oh my poor girl, RA is definitely impacted by sleep. I know that when I get run down I get multiple flare ups and overall generally hurt everywhere. It's usually gone with a couple of good nights sleep and being extra kind to your body for a few days.

I'm not sure if you have family or a close friend living close by but if you do please don't be shy to ask for some help. Perhaps one of them could watch your really cute, little guy so that you could get some extra sleep 😴. I promise you will feel a lot better if you do.

There's a lot of info on what lack of sleep will do to your body, none of it good. Sleeping is when your body repairs and heals. If you're not getting enough sleep it is going to impact your immune system and you will also be more susceptible to getting sick as well. If I lived close to you I would be glad to watch your sweet little boy. I really hope you have someone to turn to. While most of us dislike having to ask for help there are times when it's necessary. Please do your body a good one !

Here's to sleep for you!

Yes it's aweful if you don't have enough sleep. Can anyone help you during the day so you can get a couple of hours. This cold weather doesn't help either.

Oh Yes indeed! I have to say when my kids were young the lack of sleep at times made RA worse. I think being deprived of sleep affects the immune system. I too was in bad shape when my kids were little. Thats when I started gold injections and high prednisone, before all the biologics. Hope you can catch up on some more rest. Best to you.

What a little doll. The answer to your question is yes. The lack of sleep also makes coping far more difficult. My heart goes out to all mothers with RA. I could not imagine caring for a child with this condition. I hope you both feel better soon.
