In the UK, it is possible to have a Tens machine on loan from a pharmacy and to then return it if you find it doesn't help, or buy it (with the amount that you paid out on deposit and lease deducted).

Can you find a pharmacy that does a similar scheme in the US? (I'm presuming that's where you are as you quote the price in dollars.) That would be a better scheme for you, as not everyone finds that Tens machine are very helpful or fit in with their life style.

I’m in the uk and my daughter was loaned one of these by her hospital (nhs) for early stages of labour. So the only conclusion that I can come up with is if the nhs purchased them they must think they help with pain relief.x

I find the TENS device to be somewhat like an electrical massage. It feels sort of soothing when applied. I'm glad I have one. Choose a setting that feels beneficial and soothing to you. It may not prove to cure the aches, but it certainly didn't make things worse for me.
