Oh what a day, wish it were over!

Hi all.

I had an appointment with the cardiologist today, it's not looking good. My potassium has bottomed out so I have to take 4 horse pills a day, and am in heart failure. If my potassium doesn't start to come up by Thursday I get to get admitted in the hospital! What can I do to get my potassium up besides taking the prescribed supplements? Any suggestions?

Thank you for the article! I love beans, so a pot of white beans is in the works for tomorrow! It has 1139 mg of potassium per cup!

I ate white beans all day Wednesday and retested today! Results should be in by Friday noon! Cross your fingers and pray for me!

All I know about potassium is that aside from people who are working in the sun and perspiring a lot so can tweak their levels with avocado, banana, oranges, prunes, and a massive intake of appropriate vegetables - if you need a significant intervention, like you do, in the form of the prescribed pills - it's best left to those with the appropriate knowledge because potassium is so important, and has a balancing act with other minerals such as magnesium, and your fluid balance etc..

I hope that taking the horse pills is successful for you and that you don't need to be admitted to hospital. Good Luck!

Kai-- "Potassium (Vit. K) foods list from USDA (United States Dept. Or Agriculture) Food Composition Databases: "

The chemical symbol for potassium is K - it is not vitamin K in that database link that you give, it is the mineral K - i.e., potassium (which is correct - but I had to correct the impression in the quote above that it is vitamin K).

I wouldn't normally mention this but it's an important distinction in this context.

Hi Mandy. I've just been told to have a potassium rich diet but for different reasons to you. My second cataract op went wrong due to my narrow angle glaucoma. They couldn't attach the new lens the pressures went really high, I have too take ocular water tabs, potassium regulates the fluid in your body. Luckily I had most of these foods at home. I did google it, sweet potatoe, advocado, spinach wild caught salmon, bananas, almonds, dried apricots. I do wish you lots of luck. X

My husband is on daily potassium tablets in Australia.

My understanding with potassium that it affects the heart and is a risk of heart attack, so hospital probably best for you
