Short Term Pain Relief

Hi guys. I'm early 20s and have been suffering random aches and pains for a good few months now. I managed to beg my GP for a rheumy referral and have now been diagnosed with palindromic rheumatism which as I understand it is like a random form of RA with no damage.

Basically what that means for me is most of the time I'm doing okay with limited aches and nothing too bad to stop me doing stuff (although that said I don't do much anyway cos of tiredness issues so what could it stop?).

Sometimes though I'll get stages with more severe pain and it's enough that I'd want to take painkillers so I can get some relief and not be prevented from doing things.

Problem is, I've tried paracetamol and Ibuprofen and neither work.

Does anybody have any short term pain relief that works for them? I don't want to be starting any proper medication at the moment because things aren't bad enough yet, but I would really like to get on top of these worse stages a bit.

Any suggestions are greatly appreciated be they medications, herbs, exercises, rituals to a giant rabbit god. I'm willing to give most things a go and if I'm not willing to try it I'm still really happy to have somebody take the time to suggest something and glad it works for them.

Anything more general in terms of location would be especially great because my pains have a habit of moving around and that general coverage would be awesome.

Thank you so much for any advice. I'm new to all this and really appreciate any help I can get in finding things that might help. :)

Hi Bubbles,I take Tumeric capsules 720mgx2 alsoBioperine to enhance the absorption. They seem to ruduce imflamation. I don't know of anything that helps with fatigue, just try to pace yourself( easier said then done). Hope this helps I suggest you google the Tumeric there is a lot of info out there.

You could get your GP to prescribe nsaid that you can take as and when you need it. These are basically a stronger ibuprofen. Co-codamol could be an option but don't take it for more than 3 days as it is addictive. Heat can help, I use the deep heat patches which stick on your skin and give heat for 8 hours. I can't actually use deep heat cream as it causes me to have a reaction like severe sunburn. Cold can also help to reduce swelling. I was told heat in the morning to get you moving and cold in the evening to reduce swelling from the day. As for praying to a giant rabbit god anything is worth a try 😜 Changes is your diet can help some people but they haven't ever worked for me. Meditation or mindfulness could help and gentle exercise.

Sorry you're going through this at your age, I was 14 when I was diagnosed with Juvenile arthritis but I'm well controlled and work full time as a teacher. Good luck finding something to help. 🤞

I'm a palindrome too - use splints or supports to rest wrists, compression glove if fingers. apply cold packs (I've been known to buy a cold iced drink just to hold the glass or bottle against my wrist), conversely soaking hand in warm water - with Epsom salts added (my new remedy) Big joints when affected are more difficult to soothe!. But my consultant is convinced that joint damage does happen with palindromic as well - so I was persuaded onto the DMARD route early. I don't find any analgesics help much when a joint is really going for the max. If any, Naproxen may help as the inflammation subsides.

Hi and welcome Bubblemonkey.

I recently attended a NRAS support group meeting where the speaker was a very well qualified hypnotherapist. She wasn't claiming to be able to cure RD but said she can teach people strategies to enable us to cope with the pain. Phoning her for an appointment is on my 'to do' list. Several years ago when I worked in London I had hypnotherapy for dental treatment and it definitely worked.

If I do get an appointment I will report back on here. I would certainly like to find something to replace all the painkillers.

Have tried all pain relief going and tramacet seems to be the best for me. Basically half tramadol and half paracetamol . Doesn't space u out like tramadol or other strong opiates but stronger( quite a bit) than over the counter. Lots of docs don't know about it and have to order it in.

Thanks for that. I might need to have a chat with my GP and see if they can help me with something like this. Could be handy to have for those more painful episodes. :)

Boots offers a combined codeine + NSAID product that works for some people (it's 12.8mg of codeine). medicines.org.uk/emc/medici...

Hmmm. I shall call it Cocodafen and I will keep an eye out for it. Cocodamol has worked well for some difficult pains of mine and my bf's in the past so cododafen sounds like a good thing to try.

Thanks for the link btw :)
