I don't think that it is necessarily long term use of prednisolone, it's just use of steroids. Even if you have steroids in the short term, you would be likely to suffer from insomnia. Clemmie

It seems unlikely to me that the prednisolone at only 5mg would be causing insomnia, although I know some people are much more sensitive to that side effect than others. It is more likely that the cause is the (entirely reasonable) anxiety that we all suffer from about how we are going manage daily life and what the future holds.

I get a bit fed up when my GP points out to be that I sound depressed and have a depressive pattern of sleep (waking up at 3am!) as it seems to me to be perfectly sensible to be like that when you are in frequent pain and have no likelyhood of anything but getting more handicapped as you get older. Of course I grieve for my previous good health - but it's a long time ago since I could skip and run! Just because antidepressants are available doesn't mean that I want to add them to my already long list of (more essential) medication - but I always say "Thanks for the offer!".
