Knuckle joint replacement

Hi , I am a hairstylist and need my mcp knuckle replaced. Has anyone ever had this done? How long before you can go back to work? Or can you?

Any advice is appreciated.

I had my right knuckles replaced about 10 years ago by a hand surgeon, I had had a failed tendon op a few years before and my Hand had drifted over and down, so was unable to use this hand. The physio after is very important, once the stitches are out after two weeks. my arm was in a sling so had to also exercise my shoulder and arm every hour. I went to hand physio ever week for a least a couple of months and do the hand/ finger exercises again every hour at home by removing the splint I was given to wear. I also found using the sling to keep my hand up worked well. My op was successful and could make a fist. With me as my hand was very badly deformed before, it's not perfect and my fingers are gradually drifting over, but I can use it, I was given information sheets, I would ask your team to supply you some and ask formation about your work. I am on humira which also controls my inflammation. I wish you luck. X

Hi Hasselleb,

I had all my MCP joints replaced in Sept 2014. It has been very successful. It was done because of severe deformities and dreadful pain. The pain is now gone and my hand is back to normal. It does take a little time and physiotherapy to get things moving again but if you are willing to put in some effort at home you should be okay. I'm not sure how long in total I'm afraid but at least a couple of months. Good luck with your operation.
